The Vorja in the estuary

The W o rja ( Russian Воря ) is a river in eastern Moscow Oblast ( Russia ) and a left tributary of the Klyazma and part of the river system of the Volga .

It is not to be confused with the tributary of the same name of the Ugra in the border area between the Moscow and Smolensk oblasts .

General

The Vorja is 99 km long and around 10 to 15 meters wide in its mouth. It rises in the Dmitrov Raion in the northeast of Moscow Oblast, near the village of Prokschino, which is about halfway between the cities of Dmitrov and Sergiev Posad . In its upper reaches, the river is a narrow brook that first flows into a lake and through a marshland near the village of Oserezkoje, only then does the Worja reach the width of a river and flow past the former artists' village Abramzewo and the middle town of Chotkowo . About 40 km further downstream, the Vorja flows through the urban area of Krasnoarmeisk and continues south until it flows into the Klyazma immediately east of the town of Lossino-Petrovsky .

The Worja is not navigable due to its narrow width, but the section downstream from Abramzewo is popular with canoeists because of the relatively fast current . Despite the large number of small towns on the riverbank and several industrial companies (including the textile factory in Krasnoarmeisk), the Vorja is an attractive river, the banks of which are mostly overgrown with coniferous and mixed forests and are often used as a recreational destination.

A special feature of the Worja is its low water temperature, which - due to the large number of springs that feed the river along its entire course - is only around 5 to 7 ° C in the summer months.

etymology

The origin of the hydronym Vorja is assumed in the Finno-Ugric language of the Merja people , which in the 1st millennium AD settled large parts of today's Central Russian areas. In 1327, the village of Vorja, named after the river and owned by Grand Duke Ivan Kalita , was first mentioned in old Russian documents .
