Vsevolod Anatoljewitsch Tschaplin ( Russian Все́волод Анато́льевич Ча́плин ; born March 31, 1968 in Moscow ; †  January 26, 2020 there ) was a Russian clergyman . Most recently he was archpriest of the Russian Orthodox Church .

Since his appointment in March 2009 as chairman of the department of the Holy Synod of the Moscow Patriarchate for Church-Society Relations, he has also been noticed by the German public at times.

Life

Tschaplin grew up in a religious family. His father was a professor.

From 1991 Tschaplin was a deacon, in 1992 he was ordained a priest, since 1999 he was archpriest . Since March 31, 2009, he has been chairman of the Department of Church-Society Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate's Holy Synod.

He was not married and had no children.

Positions

Public dress code

In December 2010, Tschaplin said that women should dress more modestly in public to avoid rape . “If a girl wears a miniskirt, she can provoke not only a Caucasian but also a Russian. If she's also drunk, she provokes even more. Moreover, if she actively invites people to contact her and then wonders why this contact ends in rape, she is doubly wrong. "

In January 2011 Tschaplin spoke again about the style of clothing. There is a problem with "people who think the street is a striptease" and advocated a national dress code in Russia . He was referring to Russian women who liked to act like strippers with figure-hugging clothes and lavish make-up , as well as to men dressed in shorts, T-shirts and slippers who deserved no respect. Lyudmila Alexejewa contradicted his view that it is not a private matter how people in Russia behave in public, in schools, at work . She is the founder of the Moscow Helsinki Group . In contrast, Chaplin was supported by Ramzan Kadyrov , the president of the Russian republic of Chechnya .

War and terrorism

According to Tschaplin, war is useful to society. He said: “If a person puts too much emphasis on money, on health, comfort, on a rational approach to social processes, then this is not life, it is death. In this respect, wars, epidemics and disasters are beneficial for society. It is better to leave the prosperity of a big city and go to the battlefield. ” Tschaplin sees the Russian military operation in Syria as a“ holy battle ”.

Regarding the terrorist attacks in Paris on November 13, 2015 , he said that they were a “lesson for Europe, for Russia, for the rest of the world” and that terror cannot be defeated with “talk of tolerance”.

Anonymity on the internet

According to Tschaplin, anonymity on the Internet has played a major role in the destruction of culture and the rules of human community. Those who hide behind the anonymous mask of a nickname are more likely to take the liberty of using coarse language, insulting nations and religions, lying, slandering and other lowly behavior.

Demonstrations

Referring to the protests in Moscow in 2011 and 2012 , he said in an interview in May 2012 that the citizens of Russia will not join the activities of an opposition that has nothing to offer. Many of those who went to the demonstrations thought they were better than the majority of the population. The problem of the intelligentsia is that it cannot get ordinary people to accept its principles. The people had excellent political intuition, much more accurate than that of the Moscow crowd .

Pussy Riot

In connection with the trial of members of Pussy Riot over their punk prayer on February 21, 2012 in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow , Chaplin said, “God does not forgive sins that are not regretted ... it is an anti-Christian idea to accept that God forgives everything. ”The church cannot influence the judgment of the judgment. However, forgiveness on the part of the Church presupposes repentance . He called the appearance of Pussy Riot "worse than murder ".

Women's role and feminism

According to Tschaplin, women should return to a traditional role within the family. He sees a dangerous and unnatural development in feminism . “A woman will be happy when she rediscovers herself as a mother, as an educator. Of course, all of Western feminism, this unnatural movement, will resist it. But it is obvious that feminism was constructed by international structures in order to exterminate humanity, ”said Tschaplin.

homosexuality

In September 2011 Tschaplin spoke out against homosexual relationships, " sodomite sin" and " homosexual propaganda ". He repeatedly linked homosexuality to pedophilia and sexual perversions. In January 2014, Tschaplin proposed a ban on homosexual relationships. He told the daily Izvestia that he was convinced "that such sexual contacts should be completely banned from the life of our society".

Deposition

On December 24, 2015, Tschaplin was deposed as head of the Synodal Department of the Patriarchate for Church-Society Relations. He told the press that he was dismissed by saying that the Russian Orthodox Church wanted to silence “independent voices”. He and Patriarch Kyrill I are at odds over the close relationship between the Church and the Kremlin and the war in eastern Ukraine. Chaplin had advocated even greater support for the pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine from the Russian government and church. In the month before his release, Tschaplin was criticized for being photographed eating a McDonald’s burger during Orthodox Lent .

stories

In February 2015 Tschaplin published the novella "Mascho and the Bears" under the pseudonym "Aron Schemajer " . The apocalyptic science fiction story takes place in 2043 and describes the destruction of Moscow by Ukrainians, gays and Islamists. Tschaplin depicts a totalitarian dictatorship in the book : vegan breakfast, dissolution of the church and conversion of churches to “sex drones”, bans on prayer, genderless “organic objects” instead of women and men, absolute equality between people enforced by a thought police, babies and monkeys on company boards for equality reasons, African mercenaries as Kremlin guards. The story ends with the fact that this dictatorship destroys the last true Russians, the "bears", in the east of Russia with a nuclear attack and in the process wiped out itself.

In an interview with Nezavisimaya Gazeta , Chaplin said that he had occasionally published stories beforehand to show "what can happen if we follow the path of ultra-liberal values".
