On February 26, 2017, Shitara made his debut on the marathon distance. At the Tokyo Marathon he finished eleventh in 2:09:27 hours. On September 16, he surprisingly ran a time of 1:00:17 hours at the Ústí half marathon in Ústí nad Labem in the Czech Republic , beating the almost ten-year-old Japanese record of Atsushi Satō by eight seconds. Just eight days later he started the Berlin Marathon , where he finished sixth in 2:09:03 hours. In early December he won the 10-mile road race in Kōsa.

On January 21, 2018, Shitara led the Saitama Prefecture team to victory in the Ekiden National Championships as the final skier. Two weeks later he finished second in the Kagawa Marugame Half Marathon in 1:01:13 hours. He finished second in the Tokyo Marathon and set a new Asian record with a time of 2:06:11 hours. He undercut the more than fifteen-year-old record of his compatriot Toshinari Takaoka by five seconds and secured a record premium of 100 million yen (around 760,000 euros ). In October he lost his record to Suguru Osako , who ran the Chicago Marathon 2:05:50 hours. At the Fukuoka Marathon , Shitara finished fourth in 2:10:25 hours.

In 2019, Shitara finished fifth in the Gifu Seiryū Half Marathon in 1:01:36 hours at the end of April. In September he took part in the Olympic qualification race of the Japanese Athletics Federation. From the start he left the entire field of runners behind and in the meantime built up a lead of over two minutes. In the second half of the race he had to pay tribute to his high starting pace, was overtaken by the chasing group at kilometer 37 and finally only finished the race in 14th place.

At the 2020 Kagawa Marugame Half Marathon, Shitara finished sixth in 1:00:49 hours. In the same race, Yusuke Ogura beat Shitara's Japanese half marathon record with a time of 1:00:00 hours.
