The Yaeyama Islands ( Japanese 八 重 山 諸島 , Yaeyama-shotō ; literally: "Archipelago of the eightfold mountains", Ryūkyū Yaima ) are located in the southwest of the Japanese prefecture of Okinawa . Together with the Miyako Islands in the northeast , they form the western part of the Sakishima Islands .

The closest island to the group, Tarama-jima, is 34 km away. From Okinawa , the main island of the prefecture of the same name, they are 370 km (Ishigaki Island). Senkaku Islands are 150 km north . The distance to Taiwan is 109 km.
Yonaguni is the westernmost island in Japan.

There are also a few smaller islands. The total land area of the archipelago is about 586 km². The Omoto-dake on Ishigaki-jima is also the highest mountain in the prefecture with its 525.5 m.
Culture
The original Yaeyama language or dialect of the archipelago as well as the Yonaguni language or dialect belong to the Ryūkyū languages .
economy
The main agricultural products are pineapples and sugar cane, and the production of traditional Okinawa fabrics also plays a role. Tourism is an important source of income for all of the inhabited islands.
