Yuma is a city and administrative center in Yuma County in the US state of Arizona with approximately 95,000 inhabitants (2016 estimate, US Census Bureau ).

geography

The city of Yuma is located on the Colorado River and is 8.3 km (to the west) and 28.8 km (to the south) from the Mexican border. The entire city area is 276.4 km², of which 0.2 km² is water.

history

There were several Indian tribes in Yuma. Those were:

  • The Quechan have a reservation on the other side of the Colorado River .
  • The Cocopah have three reservations in the city.

In 1540 the place was discovered during an expedition led by Hernando de Alarcón and Melchior Díaz , who immediately saw that it was an ideal location for a city. The city was part of Mexico until 1854 . From 1854 to 1858 the city was named Colorado City , from 1858 to 1873 Arizona City . In the 1870s, the Yuma – Los Angeles railway line was built by Southern Pacific Transportation . Today it is only used by the Union Pacific Railroad for freight traffic.
