The holy Ivo of Kermartin of Kermartin ( . Fr. Yves de Hélory Kermartin , bret. Erwan Helouri a Gervarzhin ) (* to 17th October 1253 in Minihy-Tréguier bret (. Ar Vinic'hi ), Brittany ; † 19th May 1303 in Louannec ) was a Breton priest and official of the Diocese of Tréguier .

Life

Ivo came from a noble Breton family. He studied law in Paris and canon law in Orléans . In 1285 he became pastor of Trédrez , Côtes-d'Armor , in 1293 pastor of Louannec, where he also died.

In 1284 the Bishop of Tréguier appointed him his official. He exercised this ecclesiastical judicial office, which at that time had a profound effect on civil life, with courage and incorruptibility and acquired the reputation of an “advocate for the poor”.

Adoration

Ivo was in 1347 by Pope Clement VI. canonized . He is the only French saint who is called "Monsieur". He is also considered the national saint of Brittany today . His patronage day , May 19, is celebrated as the Breton national holiday Gouel Erwan (French: Fête de la Saint-Yves ).

St. Ivo is considered the patron saint of lawyers in many European countries . In Germany, the saint was and is highly respected, especially at the University of Trier . From 1473 to 1798 the dean of the law faculty was elected on May 19 . The seal of the old law faculty, continued in today's Trier Law Faculty, shows St. Ivo as a scholar at the book desk with the subheading “S. Ivo ”. Since 2016, St. Ivo has been the patron saint of data protectionists, at least informally. The saint adorns the seal of the Catholic Data Protection Center in Dortmund.

Rogier van der Weyden painted St. Ivo around 1450. His painting can be seen in the National Gallery in London.

The stained glass window Life of Saint Ivo Hélory in Moncontour, Brittany region, was created in 1537. Ivo's exemplary incorruptibility is reflected in stained glass windows created around 1550 such as the Judgment of Ivo Hélory (Les Iffs) or the Judgment of Ivo Hélory (Plonévez-du-Faou) .

The relics of St. Ivo are kept in the Cathedral of Tréguier together with those of St. Tugdual in a gilded shrine donated by the Parisian Archbishop Hyacinthe-Louis de Quélen in the 19th century.
