Zakia Hamdani Meghji (born December 31, 1946 in Zanzibar , Tanzania ) is a Tanzanian politician of the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), who was Minister of Health from 1994 to 1997, Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism between 1997 and 2005 and, most recently, Minister of Finance from 2006 to 2008 was.

Life

Zakia Hamdani Meghji, daughter of Mohammed Abdulrahman Hamdani and his wife Salama Rubeya El-Genzel, first completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) after attending school , which she completed in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). From 1971 to 1972 she was a teacher at a secondary school in Dar es Salaam and then from 1972 to 1978 head of department and senior teacher at the Cooperative College in Moshi . During this time she completed postgraduate studies at the UDSM, which she completed in 1976 with a Master of Arts (MA). She then worked from 1978 to 1986 as an education officer for the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) and from 1984 to 1986 as chairwoman of the Moshi-based Savings and Credit Cooperative and then from 1986 to 1988 as program manager for women and youth programs in development cooperatives Tanzania . She then switched to civil service and served as district commissioner for the Moshi Rural district between 1988 and 1990 and then as regional commissioner for the Kilimanjaro region from 1990 to 1992 .

In 1992 Zakia Hamdani Meghji, who is a member of the CCM ( Chama Cha Mapinduzi ) Revolutionary Party , became Vice Minister for Health and subsequently took over the post of Health Minister in the cabinet of Prime Minister Cleopa David Msuya in 1994 , which she also held in the subsequent government of Prime Minister Frederick Sumaye held from 1995 to 1997. As part of a government reshuffle , she acted as the successor to Juma Ngasongwa between 1997 and her replacement by Anthony Diallo in 2005 as Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism in the Sumaye cabinet. In 2005 she was appointed a member of the National Assembly by President Jakaya Kikwete , of which she was a member until 2010.

On January 4, 2006, President Jakaya Kikwete appointed Zakia Hamdani Meghji to succeed Basil Mramba as Finance Minister in Prime Minister Edward Lowassa's cabinet . When the new government was formed, Asha-Rose Migiro was appointed foreign minister, Juma Kapuya was appointed minister of defense and John Chiligati was minister of the interior. As Finance Minister, she was also a member of the Board of Governors of the International Monetary Fund (UWF). She held the post of finance minister until her replacement by Mustafa Mkulo on February 13, 2008. As part of this government formation, Hussein Mwinyi became defense minister and Lawrence Masha minister of the interior, while Bernard Membe remained foreign minister. In November 2012 she replaced Mwigulu Nchemba as secretary of the CCM's Central Committee for Economics and Finance.

From their marriage on March 21, 1971, the five children Nyangu, Mahir, Jamilla, Salama and Abdulrahman Meghji were born.
