Zao Wou-Ki
Zao Wou-Ki ( Chinese 赵无极 , Pinyin Zhào Wújí ); (* February 13, 1920 , according to other sources February 13, 1921 in Beijing , Republic of China ; † April 9, 2013 in Nyon , Switzerland ), was a French - Chinese painter who lived in Paris for a long time and since 2011 in Switzerland .
Life
Zao was born into a scholarly family and learned Chinese calligraphy as a child . From 1935 to 1941 he continued his studies at the Academy of Arts in Hangzhou with courses on Chinese painting and "Western painting". He was a professor at the academy from 1941 to 1947.
In 1947 Zao went to Paris, where he settled on Montparnasse and took courses in painting with Othon Friesz . In 1964 he was at the instigation of André Malraux , the French citizenship . Since 1983 his work has also been recognized in the People's Republic of China . The Chinese National Museum in Beijing exhibited some of his works in the same year. Later he was a professor at his old academy in Hangzhou.
style
Zou's artistic style since the beginning of the 1950s is assigned to that of Lyrical Abstraction and the Nouvelle École de Paris . At the beginning of his work he was influenced by Paul Klee , but later changed to "abstract". He often worked in large formats - also in the form of diptychs or triptychs - using "exploding colors". Mostly he named his works only after the date on which they were completed. Like Henri Michaux , he worked with the means of Chinese ink painting and combined the rhythmic elements of traditional Chinese painting with abstract subjects.
