Zdenko Hans Skraup
Zdenko Hans Skraup (born March 3, 1850 in Prague , † September 10, 1910 in Vienna ) was a Bohemian-Austrian chemist .
life and work
Skraup studied from 1866 to 1871 at the German Technical University in Prague and then became an assistant there. During his studies he joined the Constantia fraternity , which has merged into the Sudetia fraternity in Munich. He then took a position in coinage in Vienna and was also doing his doctorate with Heinrich Will . In 1881 he took over a professorship and in 1887 moved to the University of Graz as the successor to Leopold von Pebal , where he was rector's office in 1903/1904. From there he returned to Vienna in 1906 as successor to Adolf Lieben .
Skraup mainly dealt with the chemistry of natural products and made fundamental contributions here, such as the structure elucidation of quinine and cinchonine . In the field of synthesis, he developed the Skraup synthesis, later named after him, for the preparation of quinoline .
In 1886 Skraup was awarded the Ignaz Lieben Prize . In 1887 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
In 1940 the Skraupstraße in Vienna- Floridsdorf (21st district) was named after him.
His son Siegfried Skraup (born April 27, 1890 in Prague; † September 19, 1972) was professor from 1923 to 1958 at the Chemical Institute of the University of Würzburg.
