action

Sam Harper, a tireless New York City trader , is in trouble after breaking the law in one of his businesses and threatening him with an investigation by the Federal Trade Commission. Sam's boss therefore urges him to bribe a federal official at his own expense. When Sam returns home, he learns from his girlfriend Hannah that Jerry, his estranged father and record producer, died of cancer in Los Angeles . Sam doesn't want to attend the funeral, but Hannah insists. After the funeral, they fly back to their hometown, to Jerry's house. The reunion with his mother Lillian ( Michelle Pfeiffer ) is tense.

Sam later meets his father's lawyer and friend who tells him that Jerry left him no money. However, he gives him a Rasieretui where 150,000 US dollars are hidden. Inside is a note stating that the money belongs to a certain Josh Davis.

Said Josh turns out to be an absent-minded eleven year old boy. His single mother, Frankie Davis, is a dry alcoholic and bartender. Sam secretly follows Frankie to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting where she declares herself to be Jerry's illegitimate daughter. Sam now realizes that Frankie is his paternal half-sister and Josh is his nephew. Sam immediately tells Hannah this news and considers keeping the money to himself. Hannah is so outraged that she immediately returns to New York, leaving Sam with Lillian.

Sam imagines Frankie as an alcoholic from New York and quickly gains access to her personal life and helps Josh with advice and encouragement. So he gets closer to Frankie too. He learns that Jerry and her mother came to visit Frankie every Sunday and that she never met his "real" wife and son. As Sam, Frankie, and Josh grow closer together, Sam ponders the situation, what to do about the federal agent and the troubles. Frankie doesn't want Sam to keep looking after Josh as she fears he will soon give up on him and return to New York. Sam eventually decides to leave the family, but returns one more time to pick Josh up from school one last time after being called at the airport by Frankie who tells him Josh was involved in a fight.

After Frankie sees Sam putting Josh to bed that night, Frankie asks him to stay. Sam now reveals his actual identity, whereupon Frankie angrily throws him out of the apartment. Lillian later has to go to the hospital because of a heart condition. Hannah and Sam meet again at the hospital and make up. Some time later, Frankie receives Jerry's inheritance. She uses the money to enroll in college and moves Josh to a suburb near the school. She gives up her job and breaks off all contact with Sam.

After Lillian is released from the hospital, she clarifies Sam about the family situation. One day Josh, who is having a hard time organizing his life without Sam, finds out Lilian's address. When Sam visits Frankie, she is still upset. He asks her forgiveness and a chance to accept him as a brother. He shows her an old film that Jerry made of young Sam in the sandpit. The film shows a little girl playing with Sam. It's Frankie. Now she understands that Jerry used her with Sam on a regular basis so they could play together and that Jerry loved both children.
