Zhang Ning (badminton)
Zhang Ning ( Chinese 张 宁 , Pinyin Zhāng Níng ; born May 19, 1975 in Jinzhou , Liaoning Province ) is a badminton player from the People's Republic of China .
Career
Zhang Ning won the 2003 World Badminton Championship in Birmingham in women's singles. There she beat her Chinese compatriot and defending champion Gong Ruina 11: 6, 11: 3 in the final.
Zhang took part in the women's singles at the 2004 Olympics. She defeated Marina Andrievskaya from Sweden and Kelly Morgan from Great Britain in the first two rounds. In the quarter-finals, Zhang Wang Chen from Hong Kong defeated 9:11, 11: 6, 11: 7 to advance to the semi-finals. There she won against compatriot Zhou Mi 11: 6, 11: 4. In the final she defeated Mia Audina from the Netherlands 8:11, 11: 6, 11: 7 and won the gold medal .
In the badminton tournament of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , she successfully defended her gold medal in the final against her compatriot Xie Xingfang . This makes Zhang Ning the first individual athlete in badminton to successfully defend her title.
After the Olympic Games in 2008 she worked as a trainer for the Chinese women's singles.
