Zhang Wannian

Zhang Wannian ( Chinese  张万年 ; * August 1928 in Longkou , Shandong ; † January 14, 2015 ) was a Chinese general of the People's Liberation Army and a politician of the Communist Party of China (CCP), who was chief of the general staff from 1992 to 1995 and thus the military commander of the armed forces was. He was also vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China from 1995 to 2003, a member of the Political Bureau of the CCP from 1997 to 2002 and vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission of the CCP Central Committee.

Life

Zhang Wannian joined the People's Liberation Army in 1944 after attending school and became a member of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in 1945 . Between 1947 and 1948 he was deputy political officer in a company of the United Democratic Army in northeast China and as such took part in battles in Xinkailing, in the Tashan Mountains , in Beijing and Tianjin, and most recently in Guangxi during the final phase of the Chinese Civil War in 1948 . From 1948 to 1950 he was chief of the telecommunications unit of a regiment of the Northeast Field Army, a staff officer in a regiment during the Korean War and between 1956 and 1958 a regiment's chief of staff. In 1958 he began studying at the Military Academy of the People's Liberation Army in Nanjing , which he graduated in 1961. He was then deputy regimental commander from 1961 to 1962 and a regiment commander between 1962 and 1966, before he was deputy head of the combat department of the Guangzhou military region from 1966 to 1968 .

Subsequently, Zhang Wannian acted as the commander of a division between 1968 and 1978 and during this time completed another degree at the military academy of the People's Liberation Army. He was then deputy commander of an army from 1978 to 1981 and then commander of an army between 1981 and 1982, before he was deputy commander of the Wuhan military district in the Guangzhou military region from 1982 to 1987 . At the same time he was on XII. In 1982 he became a candidate for the CCP Central Committee (CCP Central Committee ) and held this position until 1992. From 1987 to 1990 he was the commander and deputy secretary of the Guangzhou Military Region Party Committee, and in 1988 he was promoted to lieutenant general. He then took over the functions of commander and deputy secretary of the Party Committee of the Jinan Military Region between 1990 and 1992 .

Zhang Wannian replaced General Chi Haotian as Chief of the General Staff of the People's Liberation Army in 1992 and was therefore the military commander of the armed forces until he was replaced by General Fu Quanyou in 1995. At the XIV Party Congress in 1992, he also became a member of the CCP Central Committee and was a member of this body until 2002. At the same time he became a member of the Central Military Commission of the Central Committee in 1992 and a member of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China in 1993. Furthermore, between 1993 and 2003 he was a member of the National People's Congress as a member of the delegation of the People's Liberation Army to represent the soldiers. In 1993 he was promoted to general . As such, he served as vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China between 1995 and 2003, and vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission of the CPC Central Committee from 1995 to 2002.

Most recently, Zhang was on the XV. 1997 party congress also member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China , the central body of power in the People's Republic of China, which has all leadership powers between the plenary sessions of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the actual decision-making power over the guidelines of politics. He was a member of this body until 2002. Between 1997 and 2002 he was also a member of the Secretariat of the CCP Central Committee and director of the Election Committee of the People's Liberation Army.
