geography

location

The Ziegenberg rises in the southwest of the Rothaargebirge , which belongs to the Rhenish Slate Mountains , in the northern part of the Siegerland and in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park . Its summit is located in the urban area of Hilchenbach in the district of Müsen , which extends southeast of the mountain. A few meters west of the summit runs the city limits to Kreuztal with the district of Burgholdinghausen , which lies west of the mountain. 1.8 km southwest of the mountain summit is that of the Kindelsberg ( 618.1  m ) with the center of the city of Kreuztal at its southwest foot and 2.2 km north-northeast of that of the Hoher Wald mountain ( 656.2  m ) with the one at its northeast foot and the district of Silberg belonging to Kirchhundem . The Heimkaus (Heimkaus; Heiminkhaus) flows west of the Ziegenberg as a tributary of the Littfe and the Ferndorfbach tributary Rothenbach rises on the eastern flank .

Natural allocation

The Ziegenberg belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Süderbergland (No. 33), in the main unit Rothaargebirge (with Hochsauerland ) (333) and in the subunit Westrothaarhöhen (333.4) to the natural area Brachthäuser Hohe Waldberge (333.40). Its landscape falls to the east into the Hilchenbacher Winkel subunit (331.1) and to the west in the Nordsiegerländer Bergland subunit (331.0) into the natural area Littfelder Grund (331.00), both of which belong to the main Siegerland unit (331).

Protected areas

North to west of the summit of the wooded Ziegenberg is the nature reserve Grubengelände and Forests near Burgholdinghausen ( CDDA -Nr. 163392; designated 1991; 1.38  km² ) with the fauna-flora-habitat- area Grubengelände Littfeld (FFH-Nr. 4914-) 303; 42  ha ). Parts of the protected landscape area Rothaargebirge (SI) (CDDA no. 555550027; 299.42 km²) extend to the eastern part of the summit region .

Mining desert Altenberg

On the west and south-west flanks of the Ziegenberg are the remains of a medieval settlement, the Altenberg mining desert . As excavations from 1970 to 1981 show, iron ore was mined there in the High Middle Ages . Since the Müsener Revier, the area around the Ziegenberg and the neighboring Kindelsberg as well as the neighboring Martinshardt in Hilchenbach, were among the most important in the Siegerland, the area is criss-crossed by numerous tunnels . The best known is the Kronprinz-Friedrich-Wilhelm-Erbstollen , which begins in the immediate city center of Kreuztal and extends far below the neighboring Kindelsberg to the southwest.

Former lookout tower

On the mountain saddle ( 486.1  m ) located between the Ziegenberg and the southwestern neighboring Kindelsberg, a wooden observation tower stood from 1975 to 2008 a few meters northeast of a forest path and road intersection ( 486.1  m ). The tower stood a few meters north of the axis of Littfelder Strasse and Müsener Strasse that ran over the saddle . In 2016 a new 10 m high observation tower was built, this time completely made of metal. The steel structure, which cost 70,000 euros, was opened on June 12, 2016.

Traffic and walking

The Ziegenberg can be reached on the axis of Littfelder Straße and Müsener Straße , which leads over the saddle that leads to the neighboring Kindelsberg to the southwest; There is a parking lot directly south of this street on the saddle. The mountain is accessible through numerous forest and hiking trails.
