The Zierenberger Warte is a former watch tower near Zierenberg in the Hessian district of Kassel .

geography

location

The watch tower is located in the Zierenberger Grund , a natural area of the Habichtswälder valley , and in the Habichtswald Nature Park . It is 1.2 km northwest of the Zierenberger core town, 900 m east-southeast of the Zierenberg hamlet Friedrichsaue and 1.5 km south-southwest of the Zierenberger Hof Rangen .

Basalt dome

The nameless basalt dome ( 311.7  m above sea  level ) on which the tower stands belongs to the natural spatial main unit group West Hessian mountain and sink country (No. 34), in the main unit Habichtswälder Bergland (342) and in the subunit Habichtswälder sink (342.1) for the natural area Zierenberger Grund (342.11). It is designated as a 3 hectare natural monument, the basalt knoll, Die Warte .

On the hilltop there are dry and semi-arid lawns as well as trees. Its northwest slope has an abandoned and overgrown basalt quarry. The landscape slopes to the east to the warmth ; The Kringelbach flows northwest to the north and flows into the warmth in the northeast.

Story and purpose

The round tower made of basalt stone dates from the early Middle Ages ; it was probably built in 785. The tower is about 8 m high and around 3.5 m in diameter. It served as a lookout post to warn the population of enemy attacks. The tower was renovated in 1994.

Traffic and walking

State roads running near the Wartturm are the L 3211 (Zierenberg – Rangen) in the east and the L 3214 (Zierenberg – Friedrichsaue) in the south-west; The Volkmarsen – Vellmar-Obervellmar railway runs parallel to the latter .

The European cultural long-distance hiking trail Huguenot and Waldensian trail , the lion trail and the 25 km long hiking trail Kassel - Laar initially lead along the L 3211 ; The 7.8 km long Zierenberg Z1 circular hiking trail runs west past the basalt knoll .

Access to the tower, whose entrance is walled up, is via a meadow path. External inspection is possible.
