The ornamental St. John's wort ( Hypericum elegans ), also called ornamental St. John's wort , is a type of plant from the genus St. John's wort ( Hypericum ) within the St. John's wort family (Hypericaceae).

Vegetative characteristics
The ornamental St. John's wort is a partially evergreen , rosette-free , perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 15 to 30 centimeters. It forms aboveground and underground runners . The stem is at least two-edged at the top. The opposite leaves are at least as long as the stem members. The simple leaf blades are oblong-lanceolate and the leaf margin is rolled up.
Generative characteristics
The flowering period extends from June to July. The inflorescence is loose and many-flowered. The hermaphrodite flowers are radially symmetrical with a double flower envelope .
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 32.

The Zierliche St. John's wort is a hemicryptophyte . The pollination is done by insects.
Occurrence
The ornamental St. John's wort is a European-West Siberian floral element in the submeridional to meridional zone.
In Germany it occurs scattered in Rhineland-Palatinate ( Rheinhessen ), northern Thuringia and rarely in southern Saxony-Anhalt . This limestone species grows on dry and semi- arid continental lawns and in dry shrubbery fringes. In Austria the species is only known from Lower Austria. It is in Central Europe, a characteristic species of the association sanguinei Geranion.
