In the 13th century, the castle was owned by the Lords of Zievel, who descended from the noble lords of Daun, in the 14th century it came to the Schmeich von Lissingen family, and from 1337 it was owned by the knight Johann Schmeich von Lissingen .

Karl von Metternich acquired the castle in the 15th century, so that it was inherited by the von Metternich- Müllenark family in the 17th century . At the end of the 18th century, however, it was already owned by the von Roth family. Since 1822 the castle and the associated lands have been owned by the Krewel family, who had been their tenants since 1766. In 1828 she had the old manor house demolished.

description

Zievel Castle is privately owned and used as a residence and business location. The outdoor facilities are only partially accessible; in the parkland around mansion, keep and outbuildings was the established in 1994/95 Club an 18-hole golf course created. Old trees and ponds surrounded by reeds, which once shaped the English landscape garden , surround the partly hilly fairways.

The rectangular complex was originally a moated castle , but its moats have not been preserved. The core of the round keep on the west side, greatly modified by the baroque dome and white paint, comes from an older predecessor. There is a gate tower each on the south-west and north-west corners. A two-storey building with a stepped gable next to the keep is dated 1661, so it comes from the Metternich expansion phase. The new mansion, painted in pink, was built between 1825 and 1828 and replaced the building that was demolished in 1828.
