Josef Pfefferle

Josef Pfefferle (born June 16, 1862 in Innsbruck , † May 25, 1939 in Zirl ) was an Austrian mosaicist .

Life

Pfefferle learned painting from Franz Plattner in Zirl and from 1875 to 1878  the art of mosaic in Venice . He then worked in the Tyrolean glass painting and mosaic institute . In 1900 he went into business for himself and founded the Zirler Mosaikanstalt, which at times had up to ten employees. Numerous mosaics were created there based on designs by artists such as Emanuel Raffeiner  and Rudolf Margreiter in the Nazarenes , Neo-Gothic and Secession styles . The mosaic company received orders not only from Tyrol, but also from Graz, Salzburg, Pressburg, Brno and New York. His son Josef Pfefferle jun. (1903–1988) and his descendants continued the mosaic tradition after the Second World War.
