The Schwerin Zoological Garden is a medium-sized zoo that is open all year round with around 2,400 animals in 154 species and almost 138,000 visitors annually in the south of the state capital Schwerin . The zoo extends between the south bank of the Schweriner See , the Faulen See and the residential area Großer Dreesch and covers an area of about 25 hectares . It is run in the corporate form of a GmbH .
The opening of the home animal enclosure was on April 24, 1956 - at that time with only 17 animals and one keeper. The zoo has been enlarged over the decades and the park is one of the more important zoos in Germany with its natural animal facilities and representative animal population. The structure of the zoo is shaped by the 3 hectare, natural water bird enclosure with moor areas in the center.
Schwerin Zoo participates in the European Endangered Species Program (EEP) for white rhinos , Amur tigers and giraffes and for a further 11 animal species . With its zoo school in themed rooms and its own teachers, the zoo offers classes in natural science subjects as well as in art , English and zoological topics for students of all grades.
In 2005 the new Africa enclosure for Rothschild giraffes, Chapman zebras and meerkats was inaugurated at the entrance to the zoo . Furthermore, in 2011, a large donation campaign at the Schwerin Zoo resulted in a spacious rhinoceros enclosure over 2 hectares in size. The Humboldthaus, which opened in October 2011, is a walk-in warm house with Central and South American species of flora and fauna, such as the two-toed sloth , the giant anteater , boa snakes and tropical fish. At the beginning of 2014, a tree house was built in the outdoor area of the collar peccaries and coatis, which offers visitors overnight accommodation from spring this year.
