The Zunig is a mountain in the Austrian state of Tyrol . It is located southwest of Matrei in East Tyrol , between the Virgental in the north and the Defereggental in the south, whereby you have to distinguish between two peaks, the Kleiner Zunig ( 2,443  m above sea level ) and the Großer Zunig ( 2,776  m above sea level ) that are separated by the Zunigtörl. The Zunig represents the eastern end point of the Lasörling group.

geology

The geological components of the Lasörling group are primarily metamorphic rocks such as quartz phyllite , muscovite mica schist and gneiss , which are sometimes mixed with minerals such as garnet and staurolite . When the rocks are weathered , clay is formed (which in damp weather can lead to unsafe path conditions due to slipperiness). Due to these geological conditions, the summits of Zunig and other mountains in the group appear flattened by weathering.

Ascents

The ascent is possible from both the Defereggental and the Virgental. Starting from Matrei, the ascent via the Zunigalm ( 1846  m above sea level ) is recommended . According to literature, the north ascent from the Zunigalm to the Großer Zunig takes about three hours. From the south, from the Defereggental, the ascent begins at Rajach ( 1368  m above sea level ), 3 km northwest of Hopfgarten . The duration of this variant is a good six hours.
