action

Paul Manthey, a young student, gambled away his father's money and was expelled from the home. Now he wanders aimlessly and hungry through the city streets and is picked up in the prostitute quarter by the aging whore Emma and taken in her apartment. Over the years she has become numb and disillusioned, has come to terms with her fate and lets herself be exploited by her brutal pimp, the beefy Anton, without complaint. The encounter with the innocent Paul awakens her spirits for the first time in a long time. She gives him shelter and something to eat, and the exhausted young man immediately falls into a deep sleep. For Emma, Paul appears as her last chance, she is completely absorbed in her motherly love for the Studiosus. The aging whore jealously makes sure that no female gets too close to her protégé, and the young Clarissa, a chansonette, shouldn't visit him either. Emma sacrifices herself for Paul, even tries to mediate with his parents, which, however, fails because of the stubborn father's hardened views.

Emma is hoping more and more for a better future that she plans for herself at Paul's side. Emma wants to leave her past behind and radically break with everything. In order to get rid of the biggest obstacle, Anton, she is even ready to buy herself away from him with 300 Reichsmarks . But Paul cannot really appreciate all her efforts, born out of love for the young guy. Rather, he is deeply disgusted by the milieu in which Emma moved so far. Meanwhile, Emma's plans for the future are taking shape. She bought two train tickets for a trip to Copenhagen with Paul. But she does not suspect Anton's tenacity with which he wants to win Emma back. Since only Paul stands in his way for this request, he quickly introduces him to Emma's greatest competitor, Clarissa. His plan works, Paul falls in love with Clarissa, who seduces him purposefully with her charms. For Emma this is the worst blow that she can no longer take. Now all inhibitions fall in her: she instigates Anton to murder Clarissa in the pint “Bimbam” between two performances. When she realizes - too late - what she has done, Emma turns herself in to the police.

Production notes

Between Night and Morning is a remake of the famous silent film Dirnentragödie, made only four years earlier, starring Asta Nielsen and filmed from March 25, 1931. The shooting ended in the middle of the following month. Originally Lamprecht also wanted to cast the Nielsen for his sound film remake, for which Zwischen Nacht und Morgen would have been the first sound film. But the Dane insisted on the greatest possible say, which the production or direction was not ready to give her. As a result, Nielsen's famous Norwegian silent film colleague Aud Egede Nissen was used, for whom Zwischen Nacht und Morgen was to remain the only German sound film. Immediately afterwards the artist, whose accent was felt to be too strong for German film, returned to Oslo forever.

Between Night and Morning , on June 1, 1931, the film censors were banned from filming. It premiered on July 12, 1931 in two cinemas in Vienna and was shown for the first time in Berlin on August 11, 1931 with its presentation in the Titania Palace. The National Socialist film censorship finally banned the strip after another review on May 2, 1933. In the explanation at the time it was stated that “the strip of images has a demoralizing effect within the meaning of the Film Act”.

Edit Angold made her film debut here with a small role. The film constructions come from the hand of Otto Moldenhauer . Composer Giuseppe Becce was also the musical director, and producer August Mueller was also the production director. A music track was played: Between night and morning: I have the slim line .

Reviews

Vienna's Österreichische Film-Zeitung reported in its edition of July 18, 1931: “The great success that silent film achieved at the time made it seem entirely justified that sound film was now making use of this extremely effective material. And the in every respect exceptional quality of the sound film 'Between Night and Morning', which was made under the direction of Gerhard Lamprechts, one of the top veterans in the field of milieu film, fully confirms this. Lamprecht has understood in a truly unique way how to make this tragedy of a prostitute, who in advanced years is filled with glowing passion for a boy from a completely different world, in a humanly gripping manner in terms of the psychological moments, extremely characteristic and incredibly lively. (...) Aud Egede Nissen develops a rare artistic greatness in this role ... and through her internalized play makes the role an experience ... "

Paimann's film lists summed up: “Today this role is embodied by the Nissen: subdued, more womanly, but perhaps because of this, paler, less natural, linguistically rather inhibited than non-German. Homolka, on the other hand, was excellent as a pimp, van Goth (The Boy) behaving a nuance, as is usually the case. This time the subject works out the character of the heroine less vividly, gravitates more towards the milieu, is seen brilliantly in this regard. (...) Overall qualification: Good medium film. "
