Zygmunt Władysław Laskowski (also: Sigismond Ladislas Laskowski and Sigismund Landislaus Laskowski , rarely Laskowsky; born January 19, 1841 in Warsaw , Poland ; † May 15, 1928 in Geneva , Switzerland ) was a French - Polish doctor and university professor .

Live and act

Zygmunt Laskowski was the son of Councilor Mateusz Laskowski. In 1858 he began studying medicine at the partially reopened Medical and Surgical Academy in Warsaw, where he studied for four years with Henryk Fryderyk Hoyer and Ludwik Maurycy Hirszfeld . Laskowski was actively involved in the preparation of the January uprising in Poland in 1863 and traveled to Paris in July of the same year ; after the suppression of the uprising, however, he did not return to Poland.

In 1864 Laskowski began to study medicine again. At the University of Cambridge he attended lectures with Professor of Physiology and Anatomy George Murray Humphry and at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London with Professor Backes-Broron. In 1865 he returned to Paris, where he continued his studies at the medical faculty with Marie Philibert Constant Sappey , which he completed in 1867 with a thesis on ovarian tumors . Already at this time he was developing a new process for the preservation of whole corpses as well as individual preparations using a glycerine - phenol mixture, which allowed the preparations to retain their fresh appearance as well as their original softness and elasticity.

He then worked as an assistant professor of anatomy and surgery at the practical school of the Paris Faculty of Medicine. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 he volunteered as a doctor and surgeon and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Legion of Honor and French citizenship. On February 18, 1876, Laskowski was appointed professor of normal anatomy at the newly established medical faculty at the University of Geneva. There he was dean of the faculty from 1891/92 and from 1907 to 1912, published anatomical atlases and was given an honorary doctorate from the university in 1916 when he retired . In 1900 he had already received an honorary doctorate from the Jagiellonian University in Krakow .

In the last years of his life he was also an amateur astronomer ; his most important discovery in the field of astronomy was the discovery of Nova Aquilae on June 7, 1918.

Laskowski married Zofia Czaplicka on August 2, 1874 in Krakow. The marriage resulted in five children: two sons and three daughters.
