Alvah A. Clark

Alvah Augustus Clark (born September 13, 1840 in Lebanon , Hunterdon County , New Jersey , †  December 27, 1912 in Somerville , New Jersey) was an American politician . Between 1877 and 1881 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Life

Alvah Clark was a cousin of Congressman James N. Pidcock (1836–1899). He attended both public and private schools. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1863, he began to work in this profession in New Germantown . In 1867 he moved his residence and law firm to Somerville. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In the congressional election of 1876 , Clark was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fourth constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded Robert Hamilton on March 4, 1877 . After being re-elected, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1881 . In 1880 he declined to run again. After his time in the US House of Representatives, Clark practiced as a lawyer again. Between 1896 and 1899 he was a postman in Somerville; then he continued his legal practice. He died on December 27, 1912 in Somerville, where he was also buried.
