Ezra Darby

Ezra Darby (born June 7, 1768 in Scotch Plains , Province of New Jersey , †  January 27, 1808 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1805 and 1808 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Ezra Darby attended public schools in his home country and then worked in agriculture. He also held various local offices. Among other things, he was justice of the peace between 1800 and 1804. Politically, Darby joined the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson . Between 1802 and 1804 he was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly .

In the congressional election of 1804 Darby was elected for the first seat of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives in Washington, where he succeeded Adam Boyd on March 4, 1805 . After a re-election he could remain in Congress until his death on January 27, 1808 . He was increasingly handicapped by tuberculosis , from which he died. He was buried as the second congressman in the congressional cemetery. The first was Uriah Tracy (1755-1807) from Connecticut , who was also a US Senator .
