Miles Ross

Miles Ross (born April 30, 1827 in Raritan , Middlesex County , New Jersey , †  February 22, 1903 in New Brunswick , New Jersey) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1883 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After elementary school, Miles Ross worked with his father in the waterway freight business and coal trade. He also began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . From 1859 to 1864 he was a member of the New Brunswick City Council. Between 1863 and 1864 he was also a member of the New Jersey General Assembly . During these years Ross also worked in the banking industry, where he soon rose to become director of several banks. From 1865 to 1866 he was a member of the Street Commissioner before serving as Mayor of New Brunswick from 1867 to 1869.

In the congressional election of 1874 Ross was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the third constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded Amos Clark on March 4, 1875 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1883 . From 1877 to 1881 he was chairman of the militia committee. In 1882, Ross was defeated by Republican John Kean .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, he returned to the coal trade. In 1884, 1888 and 1892 he took part as a delegate to the respective Democratic National Conventions . Miles Ross died in New Brunswick on February 22, 1903.
