Elmer H. Geran

Elmer Hendrickson Geran (born October 24, 1875 in Matawan , New Jersey , †  January 12, 1954 in Marlboro , New Jersey) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1923 and 1925 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Elmer Geran attended his homeland public schools and the Glenwood Military Academy . In 1895 he graduated from the Peddie Institute in Hightstown . This was followed by studies at Princeton University until 1899 . After a subsequent law degree at the New York Law School and his admission to the bar in 1901, he began to work in this profession in Jersey City . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . From 1911 to 1912 and from 1916 to 1917 he was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly ; from 1912 to 1915 he was a member of the New Jersey State Water Commission. From 1915 to 1917 Geran served as the assistant prosecutor in Monmouth County . After that he was sheriff chief of police in this district until 1920 . In the years 1920 and 1921 he served as the successor to Joseph Lamb Bodine for a few months as a federal attorney for New Jersey. He then practiced as a lawyer in Asbury Park .

In the 1922 congressional election , Geran was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded Republican T. Frank Appleby on March 4, 1923 , whom he defeated in the election. Since he lost to Appleby in 1924, who then died shortly after the election, he was only able to complete one term in Congress until March 3, 1925 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, Elmer Geran worked as a lawyer again until 1927. After that he worked for the company New Jersey Gravel & Sand Co. operates. At the time of his death on January 12, 1954, he was its vice-president and finance director.
