Joseph Anthony LeFante (born September 8, 1928 in Bayonne , New Jersey , †  February 26, 1997 in New York City ) was an American politician . In 1977 and 1978 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joseph LeFante attended public schools in his home country including Bayonne High School . He served in the New Jersey National Guard from 1947 to 1952. Between 1953 and 1955 he continued his education at St. Peter's Institute of Industrial Relations ; in 1957 he graduated from the Real Estate Institute of New Jersey . Then he worked as a private businessman. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1962 and 1970 he was a councilor in Bayonne. From 1964 to 1967 he was also a member of the school committee of this municipality.

Between 1969 and 1976 LeFante was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly . In 1975 he was a delegate to the regional Democratic Party conference in New Jersey; the following year he took part in the Democratic National Convention in New York, where Jimmy Carter was nominated as a presidential candidate. In the 1976 congressional election , LeFante was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 14th  constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded Dominick V. Daniels on January 3, 1977 . He was able to exercise this mandate in Congress until his resignation on December 14, 1978, three weeks before the regular end of the legislative period.

In 1982, Joseph LeFante sought unsuccessfully for his party's nomination for the US Senate elections . After that, he no longer appeared politically. He died on February 26, 1997 in New York.
