William F. Birch, 1918

William Fred Birch (born August 30, 1870 in Newark , New Jersey , †  January 25, 1946 in Glen Ridge , New Jersey) was an American politician . In 1918 and 1919 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Birch attended public schools in Dover , where he had moved with his parents in 1874. He then attended the New Jersey State Model School and then until 1887 Coleman's Business College in Newark. After that he worked in chimney construction, among other things. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . For several years he was a member of Dover City Council. Between 1910 and 1912 he was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly .

After the death of Congressman John H. Capstick , Birch was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he took up his new mandate on November 5, 1918 when the by-election was due for the fifth seat of New Jersey . Since he was no longer running in the regular congressional elections of 1918 , he was only able to end the current legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1919 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, Birch resumed his previous activities. He has also worked in fire insurance, the automotive business and banking. In 1941 he retired. He died in Glen Ridge on January 25, 1946 and was buried in Dover.
