Herman Lehlbach

Herman Lehlbach (born July 3, 1845 in Heiligkreuzsteinach , Grand Duchy of Baden , †  January 11, 1904 in Newark , New Jersey ) was an American politician . Between 1885 and 1891 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Herman Lehlbach, who comes from what is now Baden-Württemberg , came to Newark in New Jersey with his parents in 1851, where he attended public schools. His father was the theologian and revolutionary from 1848 in Baden Friedrich August Lehlbach (1805-1875). After finishing school, he worked in the construction industry. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1884 and 1886 he was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly . In the congressional elections of 1884 Lehlbach was elected in the sixth constituency of his state in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded William Fiedler on March 4, 1885 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1891 . In 1890 he declined to run again.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Herman Lehlbach worked again in the construction industry. Between 1893 and 1896 he was a sheriff and chief of police in Essex County . He died on January 11, 1904 in Newark, where he was also buried. His nephew Frederick R. Lehlbach also became a congressman.
