Franklin William Fort (born March 30, 1880 in Newark , New Jersey , †  June 20, 1937 in Rochester , Minnesota ) was an American politician . Between 1925 and 1931 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Franklin Fort was the son of Governor John Franklin Fort (1852-1920). In 1888 he came to East Orange with his parents , where he attended public schools. He then graduated from Newark Academy and in 1897 the Lawrenceville School . This was followed by studies at Princeton University until 1901 . After studying law at New York Law School and being admitted to the bar in 1903, he began to work in this profession in Newark. In 1907 and 1908 he served as a council writer ( recorder ) for the City of East Orange. During the First World War he was a volunteer on the staff of the federal food administration in the federal capital Washington, DC from 1917 to 1919. He then worked in Newark in the insurance industry and in the banking industry.

Politically, Fort was a member of the Republican Party . In the congressional elections of 1924 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the ninth constituency of New Jersey, where he succeeded Daniel F. Minahan , whom he had defeated in the election, on March 4, 1925 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1931 . Between 1928 and 1930 he was secretary of the Republican National Committee . His last years in Congress were marked by the events of the Great Depression.

In 1930 Fort renounced another candidacy for the US House of Representatives. Instead, he ran unsuccessfully for his party's nomination for the US Senate elections . After his time in Congress ended, he returned to practice as a lawyer. He was Chairman of the Board of the Federal Home Loan Bank in 1932 and 1933 . Franklin Fort died in Rochester on June 20, 1937 and was buried in Bloomfield .
