Charles Francis Xavier O'Brien (born March 7, 1879 in Jersey City , New Jersey , †  November 14, 1940 there ) was an American politician . Between 1921 and 1925 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles O'Brien attended the public schools in his home country as well as St. Aloysius Academy and Saint Peter's College . He then studied at Fordham University in New York City . After completing a law degree at New York Law School and being admitted to the bar, he began working in this profession in Jersey City. He also became a judge at a criminal court. Between 1917 and 1921, O'Brien was Director of Public Safety for the City of Jersey City.

Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party , whose Democratic National Convention he attended as a delegate in 1920. In the congressional election of the same year , O'Brien was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the twelfth constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded James A. Hamill on March 4, 1921 . After being re-elected, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1925 . In 1924 he renounced another candidacy. Between 1926 and 1936, O'Brien served as Registrar of Records in the Hudson County administration . He then served in the Jersey City City Council's Legal Department until his death on November 14, 1940.
