Thomas Charles McGrath Jr. (born April 22, 1927 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , †  January 15, 1994 in Delray Beach , Florida ) was an American politician . Between 1965 and 1967 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas McGrath attended St. Joseph's Preparatory School in Philadelphia until 1944 and then studied at the University of Notre Dame until 1945 . Between June and November 1945 he served in the United States Navy . He then graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis ( Maryland ) in 1950 . From 1950 to 1954 he served again in the Navy, where he was a member of both the Atlantic Fleet and the Pacific Squadron. After a subsequent law degree at the University of Pennsylvania and his admission to the bar in 1958, he began to work in this profession in Philadelphia. In 1964, he served as the Assistant Attorney General of New Jersey. He then served as an attorney in Atlantic City until 1965 . At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In the 1964 congressional election , McGrath was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded Milton W. Glenn on January 3, 1965 . Since he was defeated by Republican Charles W. Sandman in 1966 , he was only able to serve one term in Congress until January 3, 1967 . These were determined by the events of the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War .

Between 1967 and 1969 Thomas McGrath worked for the New Jersey State Government in the Department of Housing and Urban Development . From 1969 to 1973 he was treasurer of the Democratic Party of New Jersey. From 1969 to 1992 McGrath was a consultant in the construction industry and finance. He died on January 15, 1994 in Delray Beach.
