• George Orwell completes the novel in 1984 , which will appear in June 1949.

• On August 15, the first staged performance of the “secular oratorio” Le vin herbé by Frank Martin in German as Der Zaubertrank will take place in the Salzburg State Theater.
• With the aim of translating masterpieces of world literature, the UNESCO collection of representative works begins , within the framework of which - by the time the project is discontinued in 2005 - 1060 translations will appear.

• The film drama Der Doppeladler by Jean Cocteau is based on his own text and script .
• The third film in a neorealism trilogy is the film Germany in the Year Zero by Roberto Rossellini , which is heavily influenced by the book L'an zéro de l'Allemagne by Edgar Morin .
• The ballet film The Red Shoes by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger is based on the fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen .
