"Shut Up and Drive"
Song

"Shut Up and Drive" is a song written by Carl Sturken and Evan Rogers for Rihanna's third album Good Girl Gone Bad (2007). The track samples New Order's 1983 single "Blue Monday". Its lyrics use automobiles as a metaphor for the persona in an offer of sex.[3] It was released as the second North American single in June 2007 (see 2007 in music).[4] It debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 88.[5] "Shut Up and Drive" will be released in the UK on 3 September, 2007 [6].

Critical reception

The song has received mixed reviews from music critics. Slant Magazine found that the song did not live up to its campy title,[7] and The Village Voice described it as simultaneously "goofy and sexually daring".[3] All Music Guide, however, referred to it as "a sleek, forthcoming proposition…as undeniable and rocking as Sugababes' 2002 UK smash 'Freak Like Me'".[8]

Music video

The song's music video premiered on Yahoo on June 20, 2007. The video begins with Rihanna driving a Ferrari F430 into a garage. Rihanna and several other girls start working in the car mechanic garage in a suggestive manner, before slamming the hoods down on cue with the first "Shut Up and Drive" part of the lyrics. The video then cuts to a scene where two cars are preparing to race. Rihanna and her friends show up, and Rihanna proceeds to flirt with the two race car drivers through the open windows of their cars at the starting line. She then directs the drivers to "Shut Up and Drive", and they take off. The next scene shows Rihanna performing with her band. Throughout the video, Rihanna is also shown in the car garage, and walking around the race yard.

When Rihanna performs "Shut Up And Drive" live, she sings, "I got class like a 57' Chevrolet, baby boy take the wheel or get out of the/my way" instead of "I got class like a 57' Cadillac, got all the drive with a whole lot of boom in the back", which is how the line is sung on the actual recording. The original lyrics included the former, before they were changed apparently during the recording of the song.

After the Yahoo premiere, the video premiered on MTV's TRL on July 4, 2007. On July 9, 2007, it debuted on the TRL countdown at number ten for the first time and has been on the countdown for four days, currently peaking at number 5.
