Rated R (for " Rated with an R" ) is the fourth studio album by the singer Rihanna . It was recorded in 2009 and released on November 20 that same year under their Def Jam Recordings label.
background
Rihanna's previous album Good Girl Gone Bad (2007) was a commercial success and received generally good reviews from most music critics. The album included five top ten hits, three US number one hit singles, including the international breakthrough single Umbrella . With regards to Rated R , there has been a lot of speculation that any of the songs on the album would be about her former boyfriend, Chris Brown . In an interview with MTV , Ne-Yo , who had written songs for Rihanna in the past , made it clear that he hadn't written a song for her about Brown because of his friendship with Brown. Producer Chuck Harmony said that whichever song is released as the first single, people will immediately think the song is about Brown.
In an interview with Marc Malkin at the MTV Video Music Awards , Ne-Yo stated that people should expect a more edgy and angry Rihanna on the album. He later told In Touch Weekly that the album is definitely going to be edgier than the way we were used to Rihanna while describing the album as "liberated." Akon , on the other hand, stated that he doesn't want Rihanna angry. With the success of her last album, Rihanna wanted to make sure she didn't fall into a monotonous tone or mood. At the Justin Timberlake & Friends concert in Las Vegas , Timberlake told MTV that Rated R has a whole new sound, and that the new songs are not just remakes of the material fans heard on their last album.
After the release of the first single, Russian Roulette , it became clear that the reaction of fans who had heard the title had been mixed. In February 2010, Rihanna said that she liked the album but that her next one would be less intense: “I like the floor, the dirt on her. But when I combine it with more energy and up-tempo pop records, I think it'll be a happy "marriage". And that's where we're probably going next. ”When asked what the most important song is for her, she said that she doesn't have one most important song, but her favorites include Fire Bomb and Cold Case Love . She also stated that she really enjoys the songs that are fun, including Rockstar 101 , Hard, and her hit single Rude Boy .
Emergence
The album was recorded within eight months from March to November 2009. The recordings took place at Milk Studios in Manhattan , New York , Metropolis Studios in London , Studios Davout in Paris and Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angeles . It has worked with songwriters such as Chuck Harmony, The-Dream, Christopher "Tricky" Stewart, Chase & Status and Stargate. It later emerged that Stargate was producing a collaboration between Rihanna and Canadian rapper Drake . After all, the song didn't make it onto the album for unknown reasons.
On October 19, 2010, an illustrated book called Rihanna was published, which shows the genesis of Rated R and excerpts of her Last Girl on Earth Tour . Rihanna co-authored the book with art director Simon Henwood. Rihanna said herself: “It's an illustrated book with pictures that people have never seen before. It's like a backstage pass, like a fashion book. It's a step-by-step creation of the Rated R album. It shows all the way to what the album and tour are now, how they were created and how it came about. ”The book is available in hardcover and paperback . The title of the book should actually be Rihanna: The Last Girl on Earth . But later it was decided to only go with Rihanna . It is only available in English .
reception
Andy Kellman from Allmusic pointed out the "provocative" content and presentation of the album, he spoke of "Good girl gone evil" (for example: "Good girl who has become bad"), albeit some "over the top", exaggerated, be. The rating was four out of five stars.
Commercial win
Rated R debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 charts with 181,000 copies sold in the first week, topping sales of the previous album Good Girl Gone Bad in the week of release. It also peaked at number one on Billboard's Top R&B / Hip-Hop Albums chart, which none of their albums have achieved before. On January 8, 2010, Rated R was certified platinum for 1,000,000 copies sold.
In the UK, the album debuted at number 16 and went gold in just four days . So far, it has sold 300,000 times and been awarded platinum. On August 1st, the album was in the charts for 36 weeks.
Although the album only debuted at number 15 in Australia, the album went gold in its 2nd week, and platinum in August for over 70,000 copies sold. With the release of the third single Rude Boy , Rated R rose to a new high of twelve. In Poland, the album reached number five and was awarded gold, with sales of 20,000 copies in just one month, beating the sales of the previous album, which sold 20,000 copies in two years. On June 3, 2010, the album was certified platinum in Greece for more than 10,000 units sold. The album reached number 19 in Sweden, number 14 in New Zealand and number 15 in Finland. By May 2010, Rated R had sold almost 3,000,000 copies worldwide.
In Switzerland, the album reached number one on the album charts and was awarded platinum. In Austria it reached number seven and in Germany number four and was awarded gold in the latter country.
