America's Next Top Model, Cycle 3 debuted on September 22, 2004. It was the first cycle to gain partnership with cosmetics magnate CoverGirl, and the cast was increased to 14 contestants. The season's catch-phrase is "Beauty In Progress". This was one of the highest rated seasons in the show's history.

The international destination during this cycle was Tokyo, Japan. The winner won a representation by Ford Models, a fashion spread in ELLE magazine, and a $100,000 contract with CoverGirl cosmetics.

The winner was 20 year old Eva Pigford from Los Angeles, California, who was the first African American winner.

Episode summaries

The Girl With The Secret

Original Airdate: September 22, 2004

The 34 semifinalists meet in Los Angeles and have a pool party to celebrate making it to California. Deciding to have a bit more fun, some of the girls trek out to a local hot spot where semifinalist Tiffany Richardson gets into a bar fight with a local. Tiffany got cut when cutting down to 20 girls. Tiffany successfully re-auditioned for Cycle 4.

Later on, the girls have one-on-one introductions to the judges and a cut is announced where 14 out of the 34 girls are eliminated, leaving a final 20. A second cut soon after eliminates 6 more girls and the final 14 are revealed.

Despite receiving rave reviews from the judges about her eyes, Amanda reveals that she has retinitis pigmentosa, an eye disease which makes her legally blind. She will be about 30 when she's completely blind.

The Girl Who Is Co-Dependent

Original Airdate: September 29, 2004

The final 14 are flown to Montego Bay, Jamaica for their first photo shoot, where they are greeted by Jay Manuel and are told to pose in swimsuits against the backdrop of the Jamaican shoreline. Jay also tells the girls that there is only room for 13 people at the apartment in New York and that one girl will be eliminated before the flight home.

The next day, the girls go to brunch and learn that they will be flying back to the United States for 7 eliminations. They receive an envelope containing the name of the girl to be eliminated. Magdalena is the first ever girl to be eliminated outside the judging panel, being eliminated on the spot when the envelope shows her name.

Back in New York, the girls move into their suite in the Waldorf-Astoria hotel. When Eva expresses contentment not sleeping in a room with Ann (after previously agreeing to do so), Ann claimed that she and Eva were growing apart. She told Eva that she loved her and was hurt that she did not want to remain as close as they had been. It was this dramatic scene that sparked rumors that Ann might have a same-sex attraction to Eva or, at the very least, be extremely codependent. After a tour of New York and some quality time with Tyra. Jennipher, Yaya & Toccara were talking about Kelle, they said she was spoiled rotten and snotty after telling Tyra that her mouth looks like a "monkey mouth" The girls proceed to their first official judging and elimination panel, where the weak photos of Leah and Ann cause them to fall to the bottom two. Leah is said to be more "plain Jane", and is eliminated.

  • Eliminated outside judging panel: Magdalena Rivas
  • Bottom two: Ann Markley & Leah Darrow
  • Eliminated: Leah Darrow
  • Special guests: J. Alexander, Michelle Mock, Douglas Barcellos
  • CoverGirl of the Week: Eva Pigford

The Girl Everyone Thinks Is A Backstabber

Original Airdate: October 6, 2004

During this episode, each girl is given a new look. Some makeovers are drastic - Jennipher is told that her waist-length hair will be cut and donated to Locks of Love, and Amanda is transformed from a brunette to an ice blonde.

For the week's photo shoot, each contestant is challenged to take a beauty shot without any make-up.

Throughout the episode, the girls begin to see signs that Cassie may have problems with body image and her weight. The girls confront her at dinner about not eating enough, but she insists that she is simply doing what she must to be a model. During the photo shoot, she tells Amanda that she is bulimic. Word gets around to the other girls, who become very concerned.

At judging, the girls review the retouched and unretouched versions of their photos. Amanda wows the judges when her unretouched photo shows barely any difference compared to her retouched one. Yaya, Eva, Nicole, and Toccara also receive positive reviews, while Cassie has a lukewarm response. Kelle is criticized for blaming the photographer for picking a bad photo, and Tyra is disappointed with Julie after it is revealed that her motive for being on the show is not to launch a modeling career but rather to gain an edge in fashion manufacturing. Kelle and Julie land in the bottom two, and Julie is eliminated because the judges feel she is only using modeling as a stepping stone to another avenue.

  • CoverGirl of the Week: Yaya Da Costa

The Girl Who Sets A Trap

Original Airdate: October 13, 2004

The remaining contestants get a lesson on runway walking from Miss J. The next day, they are surprised to know that they will be taking part in a fashion show for Heatherette which is a dream come true for Norelle because Heatherette is her favourite designer. Amanda was worried her night-blindness will be her road to elimination because the runway was dark. Norelle stumbles in the runway, Eva steals the show with her remarkable runway walk and Toccara's sexy full figure stood out and she received the most applause but Eva believes Toccara got applause because her "titties were out". Amanda makes a mistake by telling J. Alexander about her blindness and the girls think she is exagerating her blindness and is lying about it to get special treatment. But in the end Eva was chosen as the winner, and chooses Kelle and Ann to share her reward which is a day on a yacht with America's Next Top Model, Cycle 2 winner Yoanna House.

Back in the house, Amanda's crystals go missing and she puts the blame on Eva. This incident actually ignites a fight with Amanda, Ann, Jennipher & Eva after Amanda bumps into Eva "by accident". Jennipher angrily pushes Ann out of the way. Ann warns Jennipher not to touch her again or she will "get knocked out"; however, Amanda later finds her crystals after remembering that she hid them to prevent anyone from stealing them and later apologizes to Eva for accusing her.

This week, the girls have a group photo shoot for Lee jeans advertisement, wearing nothing but the product. During panel, the girls were challenged to walk in heels 2 sizes smaller wearing little pink dresses. Jennipher mooned the judges with her butt with "ANTM" written on both butt-cheeks. Kristi and Jennipher are called forward as the bottom two but in the end, despite a stellar portfolio, Kristi is sent home due to her lack of confidence.

The Girl Who Cries When She Looks In The Mirror

Original Airdate: October 20, 2004

The contestants get a lesson in posing from Janice Dickinson, and are challenged to pose as mannequins in lingerie at La Perla's store window. Kelle is chosen as the winner for her natural poses. Her prize is lingerie worth $5,000 and she chooses Amanda and Toccara, who receive lingerie worth of $1,500 and $500.

For the week's photo shoot, each contestant has to pose on roller skates to advertise Dooney & Bourke purses. Amanda, Eva and Yaya impress Jay Manuel with their creativity while Jennipher, Ann and Kelle struggle in the photo shoot.

At panel, Kelle is criticized for her lack of emotion in her photograph while Jennipher's insecurity puts off the judges. They consequently land in the bottom two for the second time. In the end, Jennipher's laid back attitude ultimately sends her home as the judges think she does not want to be there anymore.

This episode is named for Kelle who, when trying to practice facial expressions in the mirror, cried everytime she looked at herself.

The Girl Who Mutilated The Precious Brownies

Original Airdate: October 27, 2004

Back at the apartment, Eva and Ann get fed up with Cassie's dirty dishes around the house. Ann takes a knife and writes "Clean Your S**t" in Cassie's low-carb brownies, which angers Cassie. An argument between Ann and Cassie lets loose at a dinner later on in the evening. While Ann and Cassie are arguing Ann asks Yaya what the phrase on her shirt ("RESPEITO") means. Yaya replies it means "respect" in Portuguese. Then she goes on about how there is none in the house. Tyra brings in her good friend supermodel turned plus-size model Kate Dillon, who talks about her battle with anorexia nervosa, and talks to the contestants about body image and self-esteem. During a one-on-one chat with Tyra, Kate and Joy Bauer, Cassie reveals she had thrown up in the past but she didn't consider herself bulimic because she didn't throw up after each meal she would do it at night when she thinks she ate too much and shouldn't go to bed with it in her stomach. Tyra offers counselling for Cassie but she denies that she had bulimia.

For the challenge, the girls must climb up numerous flights of stairs, and as soon as they're done, the have to do a photo shoot. Yaya was the winner for running the fastest up the stairs, while Ann came in a close second. Yaya chose Toccara and the two shared a spa day on the rooftop.

For this week's photo shoot the girls pose for YJ Stinger Energy Drink while jumping on a trampoline. Amanda, Eva and Nicole are universally praised for their photos while Kelle, Ann and Cassie struggle.

Kelle and Ann land in the bottom two, both for their lackluster photos. The judges decide that Ann has more potential, and Kelle is sent home.

  • Bottom two: Ann Markley & Kelle Jacob

  • Special guest: Kate Dillon
  • CoverGirl of the Week: Toccara Jones

The Girl Who Forgot Her Shoes

Original Airdate: November 3, 2004

In an earlier episode, Cassie had revealed to Amanda that she suffered from bulimia, and her secret had subsequently spread to all of the contestants as well as to Tyra. Tyra offers counseling to Cassie, but she refuses help and denies that she has bulimia. Toccara was in the bottom two, due to her questionable place in the fashion industry, and Cassie for her seemingly lack of drive and lackluster performance in a photo shoot for Ford Mustang automobiles, in which each contestant poses twice to represent dual identities in their respective characters, and Cassie is cut.

The Girl Who is Panic Stricken

Original Airdate: November 10, 2004

The girls get fashion advice from stylist Rebecca Weinberg. Afterwards, they are taken to a shopping spot to find a fashionable outfit to wear. When the girls are finished, they are dropped off at a secret location that turns out to be an impromptu red carpet. Eva panics when a photo shoot requires her to pose with a live tarantula. At elimination, Yaya goes over the edge when Rebecca says that Yaya wants to prove her "African-ness". Despite being petrified of the spider Eva pulled off a phenomenal photo. The judges felt that Eva, Nicole and Yaya shined in the photo, while Ann, Toccara, and Norelle struggled. In a shocking elimination, Toccara is eliminated because the judges felt the vibrant personality she needed to succeed in the industry was dwindling.

The Girls Meet Taye Diggs

Original Airdate: November 17, 2004

The remaining contestants - Yaya, Nicole, Norelle, Ann, Eva, and Amanda have an acting lesson with Taye Diggs. When it comes for Taye to tell the girls how they did, he forgets Nicole. Then Tyra comes out and announces that the girls will be going to Tokyo for the remainder of the competition. As Yaya won the challenge, she picks Amanda to fly first class with her while the other girls ride in coach. When they get to the airport the workers think they are just wanting to go on vacation and not for work. Instead of a photo shoot, the contestants film a Campbell's soup commercial speaking Japanese. During the judging test, the girls are required to read a commercial and eat umeboshi, a very salty and sour pickled fruit that the contestants reacted adversely to. Yaya shows a bad attitude during the judging panel after spitting the product out in front of the judges, which lands her in the bottom two. Nicole is eliminated for not being sufficiently noticeable and Yaya is told she needs to eat some humble pie.

The Girl The Lionesses Are Hunting

Original Airdate: December 1, 2004

For their challenge the girls learn about the Tea Ceremony and Yaya wins and picks Amanda to go to a hot spring. The girls all later gang up on Eva after a comment she made about Norelle out of frustration in the previous episode. Eva later apologises to Norelle who still loves her despite what she said. Tyra poses for the girls. Eva and Amanda shine while Ann, Yaya and Norelle struggle. Tyra becomes disappointed in Eva as she brings her emotions to panel. Although Ann is still struggling to take a strong photo, the next contestant to be sent home is Norelle, who had compiled an impressive portfolio and whose photo this week was good. However, she struggles during her time in Japan and is eliminated because she is not as eye catching in person as she is in photos.

The Girl Who Didn't Hug Goodbye

Original Airdate: December 8, 2004

The twelfth episode of the season features an anime-themed photo shoot to reflect Japan's modern culture. The challenge consisted of go sees while still having Japanese street fashion. Ann and Eva work together to get their way around Tokyo. Yaya is late for the challenge and Eva wins. After her record 5th appearance in the bottom two, Ann is cut at panel because, though she is a natural beauty, she continues to struggle to translate her looks into a strong photograph. This episode is named for Ann, as she does not hug her best friend Eva goodbye due to an argument. However, Ann and Eva end up as friends on the "Where are they now" episode aired after the end of the cycle.

The Girl Who Wins It All

Original Airdate: December 15, 2004

In the Cycle 3 finale, Amanda, Yaya, and Eva go head-on in the CoverGirl photo shoot. At the first panel, the judges have trouble deciding who to eliminate, as all three girls were showered with praise for their great photographs. After deliberation, Yaya is called first, leaving Amanda and Eva in the Bottom 2. Tyra proclaims that both girls have what the others need. For Amanda, she has an edgy look, but lacks persona. As for Eva, she is approachable and very commercial, but does not have the look for high fashion. In a tough elimination, Eva is selected to be in the Final 2, making it the first duo African-American women contending for the title. An emotional Eva thought that she was going to go home, while Amanda is heartbroken that she did not reach it to the runway.

At the last judging Yaya and Eva are compared head-to-head. Though Yaya's final runway performance and consistently gorgeous portfolio impresses the judges, her less-than-humble attitude does not. Eva is then declared America's Next Top Model.
