"Sorry"
Song

"Sorry" is a popdance song written by American singer-songwriter Madonna and Stuart Price for Madonna's eleventh studio album Confessions on a Dance Floor (2005). It is produced by Madonna and Price and it received a positive reception from music critics. The song was released in 2006 as the second single from the album and it reached number one in Greece, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, where it became Madonna's twelfth number one hit single. It reached the top ten in Australia, France, Germany and Ireland. In the United States, "Sorry" was a success on the Billboard dance charts, where it reached the top position on the Hot Dance Airplay chart and the Dance Club chart. However, despite the release of multiple commercial formats, the track flopped by peaking at only number fifty-eight on Billboard's Hot 100 chart.

Song information

It was released as the album's second single on February 17 2006 (see 2006 in music) in the Netherlands, Germany, Italy and Ireland, and on February 20 2006 in the United Kingdom and other European territories. In the United States and Canada, the single was released on February 28, but in the U.S. it "Sorry" was released to pop radio on February 7. In Australia it was released on the sixth of March.

"Sorry" was released to major radio stations for radio play worldwide in early to mid January, and it posted the highest debut on the U.S. Billboard dance airplay chart for the week of January 21. The single has also charted on multiple download and airplay charts in countries such as France, Greece, the Netherlands, Slovenia and the UK. In January, Madonna's official fanclub, Icon, confirmed that "Sorry" had been remixed by Pet Shop Boys, Man With Guitar (Stuart Price), Paul Oakenfold and Green Velvet.

Music video

File:Madonna in Sorry.jpg

The single's video was directed by Madonna's longtime choreographer, Jamie King. Many of the performers featured in Madonna's "Hung Up" video are in her "Sorry" one. King co-conceptualized her videos for "Human Nature" and "Don't Tell Me", and directed her Drowned World and Re-Invention world tours. The video was shot on January 17 & January 18 2006 in London, and premiered on February 8, 2006. After four days on the MTV's Total Request Live countdown, the video reached number one on February 23, 2006. The video has also reached number one on MTV Germany's Top 10. Sorry also reached #1 in the [1] Countdown on March 31, 2006

The music video begins where "Hung Up" left off with Madonna and her dancers leaving the club. The video features four sequences; Madonna and her dancers in a disco-style van picking up all kinds of guys, making them dance and eventually kicking them out of the van; a dance competition in a cage which feature’s Madonna in a white leotard outfit; a roller rink where Madonna and her dancers perform a group dance which features some elements of the choreography used in "Hung Up"; during the 'spoken words,' and during parts of the chorus, Madonna is featured on her own, singing in front of a neon background.

An alternate version of the video exists, but with few differences. The alternate video runs of one minute and 30 seconds, and features Madonna giving 'the finger' to the camera.[1]

Trivia

  • The languages used in order as they appear in the song:
    • Intro
    • French: Je suis desolée ("I am sorry")
    • Spanish: Lo siento ("I'm sorry")
    • Dutch: Ik ben droevig ("I am sad")
    • Italian: Sono spiacente ("I am sorry" in a formal way)
    • Spanish: Perdóname ("Forgive me")
    • Bridge
    • Japanese: ごめんなさい /gomen nasai/ ("I am sorry")
    • Hindi: Mujhe maaf karo ("Please forgive me")
    • Lithuanian: Iseik prasau ("please leave me")
    • Hebrew: "סליחה" /Sleechah/ ("Sorry". Literally: "Forgiveness")
    • English: Forgive me
  • The Dutch translation in the song is "ik ben droevig" which translates to "I am sad". The correct Dutch translation of "I am sorry" is "Het spijt me". Strangely Altavista's babelfish makes the same English-to-Dutch translation error (the Dutch-to-English translations are correct).
  • The van was "pimped" by the UK edition of MTV's Pimp My Ride (to be broadcast on MTV UK on Sunday 19th February 2006)
  • The single cover for "Sorry" marks the first time that a picture taken by a Madonna fan is being used as the cover image for one of her singles. Members of the Mad-Eyes Madonna fansite were contacted by Madonna's management in December 2005 after they saw pictures of Madonna's November show in London's G.A.Y nightclub, taken by Mad-Eyes photographer Marcin Kokowski. Designer Giovanni Bianco changed the colour of Madonna's hair to red, like he did for the album cover.[2]
  • The "Let It Will Be (Paper Faces Mix)" will also be available on the single. The mix, produced by Stuart Price, was recently performed on her promo tour, most memorably at KOKO club, in London and has become a favourite among fans.
