Nelonen is a Finnish commercial TV channel. It started out as Helsinki's local television channel PTV in 1989 on the HTV cable network, which name was changed first to PTV4 and then to Nelonen. It started on the 1 June 1997. Nelonen, in Finnish, means the glyph of the number four. The channel is mostly owned by SanomaWSOY Oyj, which owns the Helsingin Sanomat and Ilta-Sanomat newspapers. Its largest owner is Aatos Erkko. Much of its programming is American (50%) and European imports (20%), with Finnish subtitles. Its main market is the 25-44 demographic. Nelonen owns the digital channel JIM.

Programmes

Some programmes may not air as of 2007.

Criticism

Nelonen was launched quickly and in an unprepared state. It has been criticised for importing "trash shows", instead of quality. Its import documentaries, in particular, have been the subject of criticism. Entertainment value and the focus on highly emotive issues have earned the label of "the tabloids in documentary". On the other hand, Nelonen has brought many quality television series such the The Sopranos and airs many prime time drama series weekly.

Controversy

During the fall of 2007, a day after the Jokela school shooting, Nelonen decided not to air a scheduled episode of the TV series Dexter. The TV series depicts a fictional serial killer Dexter Morgan and it was said to be inappropriate after such nationwide dramatic turn of events. The episode was instead shown a week later.
