4400 - Returnees ( English 4400 ) is an American mystery - and sci-fi series. It was originally conceived as a five-part miniseries and was first broadcast on July 11, 2004 on the US cable station USA Network . After the great success, three more seasons were commissioned. The series was conceived by Scott Peters and René Echevarria and produced by Francis Ford Coppola .

action

4,400 men, women and children who disappeared between 1946 and 2004 are resurfacing near Seattle , WA in the northern United States after a comet appears . None of the returnees (collectively "The 4400") can remember what happened to them, and none of them have aged since their "kidnapping". Much has changed for the 4,400 men and women, for example relatives and friends have died or a completely new life has been built in which there is no longer any room for the returnees. In addition, the majority of the population is suspicious of them. Little by little, all returnees develop special, psychic abilities, each one different.

The National Threat Assessment Command (NTAC), a division of Homeland Security , is forming a team to investigate what happened to the 4400 while trying to resolve conflicts with the population. On the flip side, some of the 4400, led by charismatic millionaire Jordan Collier, who was also kidnapped, are banding together to find out what happened to them and to protect themselves from popular assault.

It soon becomes apparent that the deeds that the returnees perform consciously or unconsciously with their new abilities have extensive effects, which are known as the "ripple effect". You and the NTAC team are wondering whether there is a big plan behind it.

At the end of the first season it turns out that the 4400 were not abducted by aliens, as many believed, but by humans from the future. The 4400 were kidnapped and sent back with special gifts to prevent future disasters for humanity.

Episode list

characters

Homeland Security

Tom Baldwin is an agent of the NTAC and his job is to solve the mysteries of the 4400. He is personally closely linked to the returnees as one of them (Shawn) is his nephew and his son Kyle has been in a coma since Shawn was kidnapped. Tom is divorced at the beginning of the series and later enters into a relationship with one of the 4400s.

Diana Skouris is a scientist and is partnered with Tom Baldwin. At first she sees the returnees as a source of danger that could carry dangerous and previously unknown diseases, but then she befriends the little returnee Maia Rutledge and adopts her.

Marco Pacella is the genius of the investigators. He always supports the team with his mostly competent, technical advice. His bond with the team is shaped more by Diana, and later he even begins a relationship with her.

Dennis Ryland is initially head of the Pacific Northwest Division of NTAC, hence also of Tom and Diana. After a few episodes he is temporarily replaced by Nina Jarvis, but when she is shot in an attack on the NTAC, he temporarily takes over the leadership of the NTAC again - at the beginning of the "promicin inhibitor scandal".

Nina Jarvis is the new head of the Pacific Northwest Division after Dennis Ryland. She is not as relaxed in character as her predecessor and takes some things a little more seriously. She is represented by Dennis during the "Promicine Inhibitor Scandal" because she was shot in an attack on NTAC.

4400 (organization)

The 4400 center was founded by Jordan Collier. Its structure is very similar to modern sects. The members see themselves as a religious community and offer seminars in the course of which one can become a key bearer. Although these seminars were only set up for returnees, Collier finally enables everyone to attend the seminars in order to discover their own skills. Because of the high participation fees, many people believe that Collier is all about economic profit.

Jordan Collier : the multimillionaire disappeared in 2002. He has his own settlement built for the 4400 and spares no expense or effort to care for the returnees. He shows particular interest in Lily and her unborn baby. He is apparently shot dead by Kyle Baldwin at a ceremony, but appears alive on Highland Beach a few months later.

Matthew Ross appears in support of Shawn Farrell after Jordan Collier dies. He's taking over the domestic politics of the 4400 centers after Jordan asked him to do so before his death. He claims to know the role of each and every one of the 4400s. Matthew is similar in character to Jordan, but Shawn likes him less.

Kevin Burkhoff was a world famous scientist before he suffered a nervous breakdown. He was then sent to a mental hospital. But he was healed by the sight of the construction of a schizophrenic returnees - Tess Doermer. It is believed that he will be the "father" of the 4400 technology. He later joined the 4400 Center and continued his research. He discovered the "promicin", which is apparently the trigger for the 4400 abilities, and made some (self) experiments with it.

Isabelle Tyler is the daughter of returnees Richard Tyler and Lily Moore. She was only born after their return and has all the capabilities of the 4400. She used her skills as a toddler to protect or manipulate her parents. After a rapid aging in which her mother died, as an adult woman she tries to develop her skills and thinks about her role in the future. Matthew Ross attributes special importance to her among the returnees.

Richard Tyler is an African American soldier who disappeared on May 11, 1951 during the Korean War. Before he disappeared, he was in a relationship with a white woman named Lily, which was a scandal at the time. Upon his return, Richard meets Lily's granddaughter, who is also called Lily and also belongs to the 4400. Richard and Lily become a couple. Soon the evidence grows that Richard is the father of Lily's unborn child, who must have been conceived sometime after her abduction. For a short time he also took over the management of the 4400 centers, during the “promicin inhibitor scandal”.

Lily Moore disappeared in 1993. Upon her return, she has to deal with the fact that her husband Brian has now married another woman and that her daughter Heidi, who was a baby when Lily was kidnapped, is now eleven years old and with Brian's second wife has a new mother. Lily finds comfort in Richard, with whom she falls in love. It soon turns out that she became pregnant during the abduction. The character retires at the beginning of season 3 when her daughter Isabelle goes through a rapid aging process that causes Lily to age rapidly and eventually die.

Shawn Farrell : Tom Baldwin's nephew disappeared in 2001. When he returns, he can heal, weaken or even kill people by sucking out life energy. When Shawn disappeared, he was with his cousin, Tom's son Kyle, who subsequently fell into a coma. Shawn has to deal with the fact that his younger brother is now of the same biological age as him and that all of his friends are now grown up. He is one of the first to join Jordan Collier and offer his skills to finance the 4400 center for cash. After Collier's death, he headed the center and became a key figure for the 4400. However, he got into conflict with the radical 4400 organization "Nova" when he revealed it to the NTAC because of an alleged attack.

The returnees

Alana Mareva is the new wife of Tom Baldwin. Her son and ex-husband died in a car accident shortly before they were kidnapped. She owns her own art gallery and has the ability to create alternative realities from memories of other people. Alana and Tom Baldwin met in one and lived in this alternate reality as a couple for eight years. This reality was created as a result of a "hooking up" action by the kidnappers. In the real world, the two want to start all over again and build a relationship again. At the end of season 3, she is kidnapped by the people from the future.

Maia Rutledge or Maia Skouris : the 8-year-old girl disappeared on March 3, 1946. After her return, she has the ability to see into the future and thus scares her foster parents. Finally Diana takes on little Maia. Due to her ability and history, it is initially difficult for her to make contact with her peers. It wasn't until she switched to the school at the 4400 Center, which was specially set up for returnees, that she found friends there and learned to accept herself.

The Nova Group

An organization that becomes active in the second season, but only shows its face in the third.

Daniel Armand is the head of the Nova, a radical group protecting the 4400. He is upset about the government's involvement in the anti-promicin scandal. He and his group carried out attacks on members of the government, but also demonstrated the positive abilities of the 4400 to show "normal" humanity the potential of the 4400 as friends and as enemies.

Gary Navarro is another returnee who was a very good baseball player before he was kidnapped. His special ability is to read other people's minds. He was supposed to use his ability for the NTAC against the 4400 centers to uncover Jordan Collier's plans. However, he was very disappointed by the NTAC, as they promised to help him if he was covertly investigating for them. But he hadn't got the help. So it was easy for Daniel Armand to win him over to the Nova Group.

TJ Kim is a returnee. It is their ability to increase adrenaline in men via a self-generated audio signal. She used this ability in an attack on the NTAC that left five dead and many injured.

Other important figures

Kyle Baldwin is the son of Tom Baldwin and has been in a coma since the abduction of Shawn Farrell, his cousin. He was later brought out of a coma by Shawn. But he was changed by the kidnappers and in certain cases they take over his consciousness in order to intervene in the action. At one of those moments, Kyle Jordan shot and killed Collier and later went to prison voluntarily for the act. When Collier, believed to be dead, appears again, Kyle is released from prison. Later, at the beginning of the fourth season, it is learned that Kyle had injected himself with the promicin agent Colliers. His ability, which he only realizes as such after a while, is vision: a young girl named Cassie leads him to answers that he would never have come up with without her. In a prophecy, Kyle is also referred to as the shaman who shows the way for the prophet (Collier) and the healer (Shawn) with his visions.
