(12513) Niven is a major inner belt asteroid discovered by Italian-American astronomer Paul G. Comba on April 27, 1998 at the Prescott Observatory in Prescott , Arizona ( IAU code 684). The asteroid had already been sighted on November 11, 1980 under the provisional name 1980 VV at the Kleť observatory near Český Krumlov .

Mean solar distance ( major semi-axis ), eccentricity and inclination of the orbit plane of the asteroid are similar to the orbital data of the members of the Flora family, a large group of asteroids named after (8) Flora . Asteroids of this family move in a 4: 9 orbital resonance with the planet Mars around the sun . The group is also called the Ariadne family, after the asteroid (43) Ariadne .

(12513) Niven was named after the American- Canadian mathematician Ivan M. Niven (1915–1999). Niven was particularly concerned with number theory and combinatorics . The asteroid was named on January 24, 2000.
