(2220) Hicks is a main outer belt asteroid discovered on November 4, 1975 by the American astronomer Eleanor Helin at the Palomar Observatory northeast of San Diego ( IAU code 675). The asteroid belongs to the Themis family, a group of asteroids named after (24) Themis .

designation

(2220) Hicks was named after William B. Hicks , an alumni of the California Institute of Technology and a distinguished engineer and entrepreneur . The name was suggested by the discoverer Eleanor Helin and the American geologist , impact researcher and astronomer Eugene Shoemaker .
