(6639) Marchis is a main outer belt asteroid discovered on September 25, 1989 by the Belgian astronomer Henri Debehogne at the La Silla Observatory ( IAU code 809) of the European Southern Observatory in Chile .

The asteroid was named on April 2, 2007 after the French astronomer and planetologist Franck Marchis (* 1973), who was known for his discovery and description of numerous asteroids, his studies of Jupiter's moon Io and his images of exoplanets .

(6639) Marchis belongs to the Themis family, a group of asteroids named after (24) Themis .
