Álvaro Muñoz Borchers (born November 25, 1990 in Ávila , Castile and León ) is a German - Spanish basketball player . Muñoz won a bronze medal with the Spanish junior team at the U20 European Championship in 2010 and a year later he made it to the top Spanish league ACB as a player from Fuenlabrada . After two years he moved to the second division club in Oviedo, before moving to his mother's country of birth two years later. At first division club MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg, he plays as a German in the basketball Bundesliga 2015/16 and in the European club competition Eurocup 2015/16 . His grandfather Feliciano Rivilla became the men's soccer champion in 1964 .

Career

As a child, Muñoz first emulated his famous grandfather, who as a long-time defender and national player is a particularly valued player in the history of Atlético Madrid , and played football before switching to basketball due to his growing body length and concentrating on this sport. In 2008 he moved from his home club to the junior team of the first division club Blancos de Rueda Valladolid , who played as the farm team Zarzuela Maristas from Boecillo in the fourth-highest national and top amateur division Liga Española de Baloncesto Amateur (Liga EBA). In the summer of 2009, Muñoz was then appointed for the first time in a final squad of a Spanish youth team and was a participant in the U19 World Cup in New Zealand . The Spanish selection achieved a rather poor placement in tenth place and was the worst placed among the five participating European national teams. In the following summer of 2010, the selection was reinforced, among other things, by the previously naturalized , later NBA professional Nikola Mirotić and reached the bronze medal in the U20 European Championship finals in the game against the Croatian selection, which at the U19 World Cup a year earlier Won bronze medal.

Muñoz had previously moved one league higher to the LEB Plata to the second division relegated from Illescas , who serves as the farm team of the first division club from Fuenlabrada . While this team could barely avoid passing through to the fourth division and twice it was just enough to stay in the league, Muñoz came after the U20 European Championship finals in the 2010/11 season for his first six appearances in the top division ACB in the jersey from Fuenlabrada. From the 2011/12 season, Muñoz was a permanent part of the club's squad on the outskirts of the capital Madrid. After reaching the play-off finals for the championship in seventh place in 2011 , they could barely achieve relegation in 2012 in third from bottom of the table. With the same season balance, a year later it was enough for 14th and fifth from last place in the table, but Muñoz 'development stagnated with a playing time of almost ten minutes per game in the top division. In 2013 he switched to the second division promoted from Oviedo , who reached sixth place at its premiere in the LEB Oro and was eliminated from the play-offs for promotion in the semi-final series against Palencia Baloncesto . In the following 2014/15 season, however, Oviedo missed a play-off placement in eleventh place.

For the following season, Muñoz played for the German first division club MHP Riesen from Ludwigsburg , who signed him for two years. A prerequisite for this was that Muñoz was granted German citizenship, since foreign players in the top division basketball Bundesliga have a limited right to play per club. This is also a very well-known practice in Spain, where nationals of the countries of the Cotonou Agreement are subject to less strict permissions in the Spanish professional leagues. After Muñoz had already played in the EuroChallenge 2011/12 with Fuenlabrada in an international club competition when he narrowly failed with the club in the quarter-finals against the later third triumph Ljuberzy , he will also compete in the Eurocup 2015/16 with successor Ludwigsburg .
