The Pelvoux , also called Écrins , is a mountain group in the Dauphiné in France . The highest mountains in the Dauphiné Alps are located in the Pelvoux . The main peaks of the highest massifs are Barre des Écrins ( 4102  m ), Grand Pic de la Meije ( 3983  m ) and l'Ailefroide Occidentale ( 3954  m ). The Pelvoux includes the Écrins National Park . The mountain range extends between Grenoble in the northwest, Briançon in the east and Gap in the south. Its natural boundaries are formed by the valleys of the Romanche (l ' Oisans ), the Guisane ( Briançonnais ), the Durance and the Drac ( Champsaur ). Some of these side valleys penetrate deep into the heart of the mountains. These are the Vénéon valley with the mountaineering village of La Bérarde , the Valjouffrey , the Valsenestre , the Valgaudemar , the Vallouise , the Vallée de Freissinières and the Champoléon .

Schematic representation of the Écrins massif

The Pelvoux got its name after the fourth highest mountain massif in the region, the 3,946 meter high Mont Pelvoux , which was formerly the highest peak in the area (and before the annexation of Savoy it was the highest mountain in France). Today the mountain group is often referred to as the Écrins massif or Les Écrins after the actual highest peak .

The region around the Barre des Écrins has significant glaciation . The deeply cut high valleys, often on the north side of high ridges, steep couloirs (gullies) and closed rock basins favor the formation of glaciers. The national park administration counts 292 mostly smaller glaciers with an average size of 40 hectares. Around 15 glacier systems reach a size of more than 200 hectares. The most famous of them are the Glacier Blanc and the rubble-covered Glacier Noir , two valley glaciers with long tongues into the flow off the rearmost Vallouise . The glaciers of the Écrins massif cover a total area of around 100 km². The total ice volume is estimated at 5 km³.

Many mountaineers consider the Pelvoux to be the "wildest" mountain range in the Alps. Because of its rugged peaks, steep walls and ragged glaciers, it is also known as the " Karakoram of the Alps".
