ČKD is a Czech machine manufacturer and supplier of electrical systems and vehicles based in Prague . The abbreviation ČKD stands for Českomoravská-Kolben-Daněk , but this name is no longer officially used.

history

It was created in 1927 from the merger of three companies:

  • První česko-moravská továrna na stroje v Praze, as , prev. First Bohemian-Moravian machine factory in Prague, founded in 1871, mainly builds locomotives, chemical plants and large steel structures. In 1907 she founded the automobile manufacturer Praga together with the wagon construction company Ringhoffer .
  • Kolben a spol, as ( Kolben & Co. ), founded by Emil Kolben in 1896. In 1898 it merged with Pražská as to form Elektrotechnická as . In 1921 Elektrotechnická as merged with the company První česko-moravská továrna na stroje v Praze, as (see above) to form Českomoravská - Kolben, as
  • Daněk a spol, as ( Daněk & Co. ), was founded in 1854 by Čeněk Daněk . In 1872 she merged with Breitfeld & Evans to form Akciová společnost, dříve Breitfeld, Daněk a spol. together. This company manufactured automobiles between 1926 and 1927 . The brand name was BD .

In 1927, Českomoravská-Kolben, as and Akciové společnosti, dříve Breitfeld, Daněk a spol. to the company Českomoravská-Kolben-Daněk, as 12,000 employees were employed in this company.

During the German occupation of Czechoslovakia, the company was renamed BMM (Böhmisch-Mährische Maschinenfabrik AG) and manufactured weapons for the Wehrmacht. The most famous products of this time were a light tank developed by the company itself - the Panzer 38 (t) - and the Jagdpanzer 38 (t) , which was based on the same hull.

Between 1946 and 1990, ČKD's factories employed up to 50,000 workers. The extensive product range included locomotives , cranes , electrical machines , compressors and thyristors . However, ČKD gained fame above all for the large numbers of Tatra trams that were built by ČKD Tatra in the Smíchov district of Prague .

After 1990 the company's situation became more difficult, which is why it was subsequently divided into several companies. In 2004, some of these companies reunited under the name Skupina ČKD Praha ( ČKD Prague Group ).
