The Špičák (German Sattelberg , more rarely also Schönwalder Spitzberg ) is a mountain in the easternmost Ore Mountains in northern Bohemia ( Czech Republic ) not far from the border with Germany .

location

The Špičák is located in the upper Eastern Ore Mountains not far from Petrovice directly on the border with Germany . At the foot is the small village of Krásný Les ( Schönwald ) , which belongs to Petrovice , and the municipality of Oelsen, which belongs to the town of Bad Gottleuba-Berggießhübel , on the German side . The D8 motorway runs from Prague to Dresden directly on the southern slope .

Natural space

The summit of the Špičák is made of basalt , which pierced the underlying sandstone layers in the Tertiary . Basalt occurs on the Špičák both in the form of basalt columns and in the form of block heaps. These cover the mountain slopes to the south and north-west. On the eastern slope of the Špičák, however, the sandstone layers have been preserved as a 10-meter-high cliff.

With its distinctive shape, the Špičák rises as a crest visible from afar above the plateaus of the Eastern Ore Mountains and is therefore particularly visible from the north. The mountain forms the clearest landmark between the Geisingberg and the Děčínský Sněžník ( High Snow Mountain ).

In the second half of the 20th century, the spruce trees originally growing on the Špičák largely fell victim to the pollutants emitted by the lignite power stations in the North Bohemian Basin ( forest dieback ). Today mountain ash and sand birch dominate here, and there is also a small occurrence of red beech on the southern slope . The mountain peak itself, like the basalt block dumps, is largely free of any vegetation.

The formerly species-rich mountain meadows at the foot of the mountain have been fallow for several years and are affected by progressive matting and shrubbery. Remaining stocks of Siberian irises , creeping willows , broad-leaved cuckoo flowers and globeflowers can still be found here . However, these typical mountain meadow plants are increasingly being replaced by woolly honeydew grass .

The Špičák is located in the Východní Krušné Hory Nature Park (Eastern Ore Mountains) , which was created in 1995. The mountain is also under special protection as a nature reserve .

history

In the course of the Royal Saxon triangulation , the 2nd order station No. 58 was built on the Špičák in the 19th century. The rest of the base of the former fixed point still bears witness to this today. A small inn had been on the east side of the summit since 1907, but it fell into disrepair after 1945. Only the foundation walls of the building remained.

The mountain cross on the summit was also destroyed after the Second World War. In 2005, an iron cross was placed on the preserved base. This was replaced by the reconstructed sandstone cross in October 2014.

Origin of the name

The German name Sattelberg was derived from its distinctive double-peaked shape, the Czech name is a translation of Schönwalder Spitzberg .

Paths to the summit

Possible starting points for a visit to the mountain are both Oelsen and Krásný Les. An ascent to the summit is possible on an unmarked path.

view

From the basalt cliff on the summit there is a comprehensive view of the Eastern Ore Mountains, the Ore Mountains foothills, the Dresden Elbe Valley and the table mountains of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. The view to the east is obscured by vegetation. The nearby area has been dominated by the Dresden-Prague motorway since 2006, which circles the mountain and crosses the tributaries of the Gottleuba on several large viaducts.
