Željana Zovko

Željana Zovko (* March 25, 1970 in Mostar , Yugoslavia ) is a Croatian politician ( HDZ ) and a former diplomat and ambassador for Bosnia and Herzegovina . She has been a member of the European Parliament since October 2016 .

Profession and Politics

Zovko is a Bosnian Croat and has dual citizenship from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. She graduated from the University of North London (UNL) in French and has a diploma as a teacher in this subject. In 1999, Zovko became a public relations employee at the State Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina and headed the office of the Croatian representative from 2002 to 2004.

In 2004, Zovko entered the diplomatic service of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In April of that year she was appointed Resident Ambassador to France . Based in Paris , she was also non-resident in Algeria , Tunisia , Monaco , Andorra and was accredited by UNESCO . Four years later, she moved to Spain as ambassador until December 2011 , with side accreditations in Morocco and with the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in Madrid . She served on the state committee for relations with UNESCO until 2015.

From January 2012 to March 2015, Zovko worked as a foreign policy advisor to Prime Minister Vjekoslav Bevanda . After becoming finance minister, she returned from May 2015 to October 2016 as ambassador to Italy - non-resident in Malta and San Marino and permanent representative to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

Zovko ran for the European elections in Croatia and in 2014 in the European elections in Croatia for the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ, Hrvatska demokratska zajednica). In 2014 the HDZ joined the “Patriotic Coalition” party alliance. This won the election with 41.4 percent of the vote, four of its six seats went to the HDZ. Zovko got the second place of her party.

After Andrej Plenković and Davor Stier resigned from the European Parliament as Prime Minister and Vice-Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the Republic of Croatia on October 13, 2016 , Ivica Tolić and Zovko took their place on October 24 . Zovko is a member of the Christian Democratic Group of the European People's Party . She is a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Delegation for relations with Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo . Zovko is an alternate member of the Committee on Culture and Education , the Subcommittee on Security and Defense, as well as in the delegations for relations with the United States and in the Euro- Latin American Parliamentary Assembly .

Zovko has an office in Split .

Awards

In 2012, King Juan Carlos awarded Zovko the white Grand Cross of the Spanish Order of Military Merit ( Spanish Gran Cruz del Mérito Militar con distintivo blanco ).
