location

Ștefăneşti is located in the southern foothills of the Southern Carpathians . The district capital Piteşti is about 6 kilometers to the west.

history

For a long time rural area - which was called Florica until the 19th century - was the seat of the Brătianu family in the 19th and 20th centuries, from which several politicians and other important personalities emerged. Ștefăneşti developed through the expansion of the nearby city of Piteşti to its suburb. In 2004 Ștefăneşti was declared a city.

Agriculture (including viticulture) and trade are the city's main industries. There are also some smaller industrial companies.

population

In the 2002 census, Ștefăneşti registered 12,983 inhabitants, including 12,607 Romanians and 356 Roma .

On the route to Câmpulung is the Bahnhoftefăneşti Argeş train station . There are currently (2008) around five pairs of trains running there daily. Bus traffic is also important (regular connections to Pitești). The national road ( drum național ) DN 7 from Bucharest to Nădlac runs through the city . The Romanian A1 motorway should - when it is ready - run about 3 kilometers (as the crow flies) south of Ștefăneşti.
