history

Politehnica Iași was founded on April 27, 1945 by students of the Technical University as Sportul Studențesc Iași and renamed Asociația Sportivă Politehnica Iași (ASP Iași; German Sports Association of the Technical University ) on May 31 . The team started first in the second-rate Divizia B . In 1948 the name was changed again - this time to Clubul Sportiv Universitar Iași (CSU Iași; German University Sports Club ). In 1949, the CSU merged with the workers' sports club. A year later the club name was changed to tiința Iași (German science ). The club continued to play in the top tier of Divizia B during this time, but did not succeed. On August 1, 1958, Știința merged with the railway sports club CFR Iași to form Clubul Sportiv Muncitoresc Studențesc Iași (CSMS Iași; German student workers' sports club ), and some of the players joined the newly founded association Unirea Iași .

In 1960, CSMS succeeded for the first time in the highest Romanian football league, Divizia A , but rose again in 1961 . After the immediate resurgence, CSMS managed to stay in Divizia A for several years. In the 1965/66 season, the team even finished 6th, but rose again a year later. On October 10, 1967, the association changed its name to Politehnica Iași . After the rise in 1968, Poli remained almost continuously in Divizia A until 1985 - apart from the game years 1972/73 and 1981/82 - but never got beyond 8th place. Most of the time, the team fights to stay up until the last day of the match.

After the descent in 1985, Poli did not succeed for the first time in an immediate rise. At first, the team narrowly failed in second, but fell back into midfield of Divizia B in the 1988/89 season. After a 2nd place in 1993/94, the rise again succeeded in 1995. Although the team had only occupied 3rd place in Serie I of Divizia B, Poli still took part in the relegation against Corvinul Hunedoara , as the runner-up Dacia Unirea Brăila was not admitted to the relegation as he had tried the game against Poli to buy. The team was relegated in 1996 after only one year.

After the descent, Poli continued downhill. This development reached its peak in 2001, when the club, which was now called Fotbal Club Municipal Politehnica Iași , was relegated to the third-class Divizia C for the first time with only 9 points . In order to avoid a deduction of points, Poli then merged with local rivals Unirea 2000 Iași and henceforth called Clubul Sportiv Poli Unirea Iași . A steep climb followed. After the immediate return to Divizia B succeeded in 2004 promotion to Divizia A. In the same year, the club changed its name again to FC Politehnica Iași .

In early July 2009, Petre Grigoraş , the previous coach of Oțelul Galați , was hired as the new head coach. He had to resign in mid-April 2010 for health reasons and was replaced by Dumitru Dumitriu . Under Dumitriu Politehnica managed not a single victory in the last seven first division games, so that after the 2009/10 season, relegation to League II was certain. Then the three million euro indebted club had to file for bankruptcy and was dissolved in July 2010, so that the athletically relegated Dinamo II Bucharest could remain in the League II.

The traditional name Politehnica was then carried in the name of a club founded in August 2010 under the name ACSMU Politehnica Iași , which arose from the merger of the second division Tricolorul Breaza and the fifth division Navobi Iași and in 2010/11 in Liga II in place of the also for financial reasons from League operation excluded FC Baia Mare took over. At the beginning of July 2011, this club was renamed CSMS Iași ( Clubul Sportiv Municipal Studențesc Iași ) based on the most successful team in the city's history . Marius Baciu was signed as the new coach, but after only two championship games and one cup game, he dissolved his contract and was replaced on August 30, 2011 by Ionuț Popa .
