The lambda (also Lamda , Lanta or Labda , Greek neuter Λάμδα ; uppercase Λ, minuscule λ) is the eleventh letter of the Greek alphabet and has the numerical value 30 according to the Milesian system .
use
- The lowercase letter λ is
- In physics the symbol for the wavelength , the decay constant , the thermal conductivity or the mean free path
- In electrical engineering, the term for the phase shift of the broadband signal
- in compressed air technology, the volumetric efficiency of piston compressors . It is calculated from: Effective delivery quantity / theoretical suction volume. The volumetric efficiency is also called the degree of delivery in a simplified way and is a measure of the quality of reciprocating compressors. The degree of delivery depends on the pressure and is around 70% for 8 bar for good 1-stage piston compressors and around 80-85% for 2-stage systems.
- In thermodynamics and all combustion (power) machines ( engines , gas turbines, etc.) the symbol for the combustion air ratio or excess air
- in mechanics as a symbol for slenderness ; See also: buckling
- the connecting rod ratio for crank drives . This is the quotient of the radius of the crankshaft by the length of the connecting rod . Depending on the arrangement and number of cylinders, λ is an important value for the oscillating forces and moments.
- the symbol for the high speed speed of wind turbines
- in mathematics the term for the Lebesgue measure
- in analytical geometry often the parameter of straight lines or planes in the parametric form
- in metallurgy the cooling parameters during heat treatment
- in geography the symbol for the longitude
- in microbiology the identifier for the bacteriophage λ
- in technical model experiments the symbol for the scale
- in computer science and mathematical logic the beginning of a term that defines an anonymous function, see lambda calculus
- in theoretical computer science the output function of a finite automaton
- in the gay and lesbian movement since the 1970s the symbol for libertas (lat. " freedom ") as equality and therefore part of the name and / or symbol of several organizations and events:
- Gay Activists Alliance : Former US lesbian and gay civil rights movement, split from the first post-Stonewall organization, Gay Liberation Front (late 1969)
- Lambda Legal : LGBT & HIV - US Civil Rights Organization (1971/1973)
- Lambda youth network : National youth association for gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people (1990)
- Legal Committee Lambda (RKL): Lesbian-gay civil rights organization in Austria (1991)
- In dams, the reduction of the sole water pressure under dams is built through sealing or drainage measures
- in fluid dynamics the symbol for the pipe friction coefficient
- in heat theory / technology the symbol for the coefficient of thermal conductivity
- in microelectronics the channel length modulation factor of metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistors
- in the Half-Life video game series, the game's logo and trademark.
- The capital letter Λ (not to be confused with the logic symbol ∧ ) is
- In the theory of vibrations in classical physics, a measure of damping - logarithmic decrement
- in elementary particle physics the name of a Λ-baryon
- In quantum field theory, the name for the cut-off parameter in regularization
- Albert Einstein's cosmological constant , with the help of which he wanted to ban the expansion of the universe from his formulas.
- in mathematics the usual name for the Mangoldt function .
- the coat of arms on the shields of the Spartan Hoplites (L for Lacedaemonians )
- the logo of Lambda Physik , producer of (mainly) excimer lasers in Göttingen
- in aircraft construction a measure of the wing extension
- a Japanese type of rocket, Lambda (rocket)
- a laser-based large format output device for high-resolution exposure of images on photosensitive roll materials from Durst AG
- a Lancia car
- a symbol of identitarian groups in Europe.
