(12284) Pohl is an asteroid of the main outer belt discovered on March 17, 1991 by the American astronomer Eleanor Helin at the Palomar Observatory ( IAU code 675) in California .
The asteroid belongs to the Theobalda family, a group of asteroids named after (778) Theobalda and less than ten million years old. The ageless (not osculating ) orbital elements of (12284) Pohl are almost identical with those of the three smaller (when one of the absolute brightness of 14.5, 15.8 and 15.6 compared to 12.6 emanates) asteroid: (101755) 1999 FN 23 , (258755) 2002 HF 3 and (355574) 2008 CR 83 .
(12284) Pohl was on 30 November 2011 after the US science fiction - writer Frederik Pohl named. The suggestion for a name came from the science fiction writer and astrophysicist David Brin , after whom an asteroid is also named: (5748) Davebrin .
